Modified I-Beam
« on: December 05, 2006, 10:03:29 PM »
Here is a shot of the Novi I'm building. The wing is, in fact, an I-Beam, but sort of built in a different way. This is just before I popped it out of the jig. I finished sanding it tonight and the all up weight with controls is a touch under 6oz. I expect the total weight with flaps, hinges and stationary flaps near the tips to be around 8oz. or a bit more.

The first shot was overcompressed a bit. I'll put up a second that is hopefully a bit better.

Hi Randy this looks to be a good method i will use in my next plan a Ares
i usually laminate the spars balsa carbon balsa so the carbon is vertical
your method is quicker  do you think that  its worth putting the carbon in a laminate .
        thanking you Pete Beddows

I'm also building a Novi 1, but I'm using the Lost-Foam method to build the wing. Attached is a photo of the wing under construction.

That looks good, Bob. One of the reasons I didn't use Dave original method was that I felt I would have a lot of problems if the ribs (and particularly the slots for the beam) weren't perfectly cut. The way I did mine just felt easier to get straight and light. The light part has proven to be true. We'll have to see how the straight part comes out, but it looks very good so far.

What canopy are you using? I have a stack sitting on the bench right now, but none are a perfect match, though a couple are very close and one very, very close.

What's your projected all up weight at this point?
