Junior Ringmaster.
« on: November 17, 2023, 03:40:18 PM »
This seems to be the closest place to post an older sport model.

I got my Junior Ringmaster done and thanks to a nice November day got flying before the snow flys.
I used my sleeve launcher which was a mistake with a low-powered sport plane, but I dodged the bullet and survived.  It weighs 16.0 ounces now, but will gain a 1/2 ounce when I add a wheel.

Looks nice Paul.  Did you make the wing longer?

Good eye.  I snuck in an extra inch n a half.
While I was at it, I stack-sanded four of each rib, enough for two planes.  A little hand work corrected the taper.
It looks kinda crude here, but with a bit of hand work it came out OK under the capstrips.  I capstrip every plane to do away with the trailing edge notching.

I use one-sided templates with a 1" gauge surface on the bottom.  This helps to square-up the stack.  Also, a little bit of clear dope helps keep them straight.

I gave up on the sleeve for sport models and added a wheel and launch hook.
It only gained a 1/2 ounce and it needed nose weight anyway.
With the 2.4 launcher takeoffs were routine.

I got my second unit done, less the fuel tank.  I knocked out TWO rib sets while I was stack-sanding.
The first unit got an LA 15 and flew well.  The second is powered by a K&B Series 70.  I expect the low 90's as a conservative goal.  Maybe even 100 MPH with nitromethane and no landing gear.

As always, I use silk & dope and minimum of color trim.  The colors don't mean anything beyond using what I have.

This time, in lieu of spars I used graduated center section sheeting.  I expect that this will work in the 15-size model.
