The Roadrunners are still alive and well here in their home state of New Mexico. At VSC V, the first year they were eligible, there were four Roadrunners present, with Mark Bowen's winning Concourse. Three from New Mexico and one from California. Right now I have one of Bill Melton's hanging in my garage and another one of mine which is ready for final painting. Might take it to VSC this year. Made from Bill Melton' plans and templates given to me when he died. Pictures will follow.
I asked Bill once why the Roadrunner was designed and he told me it was designed for the Los Alamos contest, where the flying field was at 7300 feet, 95 degrees, and 2-3% relative humidity. Having since flown there, I fully understand his and Jim's reasoning. We here in Albuquerque normally fly at 5400 feet, at times 100 degrees, and 10% relative humidity and as a Judge, and flyer, I have seen many modern planes drop through the corners. Lost a Green Box Nobler here because I foolishly put a Fox 35 in it and it just belly slammed into the pavement on an inside square.
