The ROADRUNNER....to me, at the nats, was always one of the most beautiful looking and flying stunt models from the good ol' days.
I rescanned this old slide...
First shot is Bob Gieske... (posted a long time ago) performing pit and lauch duty for Jim Young...How's that for a HIGH POWERED LAUNCHING CREW. (seems like a few seconds before I took this photo...
Bob reached up and tweaked the needle valve open a couple of notches?)
Whatever...it seemed to work as that pattern flown that day by Jim...to me..was one of the best.
Anyone who has flown a RoadRunner lately....any thoughts.
check out this previous post.

Your right , that is one nice stunt plane. Going to write that one down and check for plans or a kit. ~~>

Tom Niebuhr (Blue Sky Models) produces a nice laser-cut kit, as well as a profile version, and sells the plans. Leonard Newman (Stuka Stunt) carries the M.A.N version, and Tom Dixon sells penciled replicas. The original article, M.A.N. 3/67, has reduced sized plans and is interesting reading. That's a start.

I have Jim's "Roadrunner" hanging in my shop.
The first picture is of Jim Young and the RR as it is today. Unfortunately it shows the results of being in the attic for many many years. But, a close look reveals incredibly good workmanship.
The second picture is Joe Bowman's "Roadrunner" built from one of my Blue Sky Models kits. Joe has been winning many awards with this airplane.

Hey Tom!!!
Thanks for those pics....LOOKS LIKE YA BOTH STILL HAVE PURTY GOOD "BONES!" H^^
Tell us more about Jim? He made flying the stunt pattern look sooooooooooooooo EZ!
-
Thank You, Serge

That's Jeff Anderson's Roadrunner. It's really nice.

Anybody got a shot of the wheelpants from a roadrunner. I remember hearing that those wheelpants are one of the most sleek wheelpants designed.

Here you go...

Here are pictures of the wheel pants on Jim's airplane. I still have the airplane, and everytime I look at it I say "How did he do it?"

Wha an artist. That looks like a space ship from another planet. How many versions is there of the Road Runner. I have the plans that used to belong to Bill Melton. DOC Holliday

The Roadrunners are still alive and well here in their home state of New Mexico. At VSC V, the first year they were eligible, there were four Roadrunners present, with Mark Bowen's winning Concourse. Three from New Mexico and one from California. Right now I have one of Bill Melton's hanging in my garage and another one of mine which is ready for final painting. Might take it to VSC this year. Made from Bill Melton' plans and templates given to me when he died. Pictures will follow.
I asked Bill once why the Roadrunner was designed and he told me it was designed for the Los Alamos contest, where the flying field was at 7300 feet, 95 degrees, and 2-3% relative humidity. Having since flown there, I fully understand his and Jim's reasoning. We here in Albuquerque normally fly at 5400 feet, at times 100 degrees, and 10% relative humidity and as a Judge, and flyer, I have seen many modern planes drop through the corners. Lost a Green Box Nobler here because I foolishly put a Fox 35 in it and it just belly slammed into the pavement on an inside square.

Gary-
Thanks again for your generosity in sending me your enlaged RR plan a few years ago. Would you post pictures of your model here? I think quite a few would like to see a classic styled larger stunter. I like it.

Your right Mel, that is me--Dave Shrum of Roseburg !!! I was skimming thru and saw those pictures of my
Roadrunner that I built in Hoquiam, Wn in 1971. That was when I had dark hair. As it turns out I have a
R.R. setting on the bench ready for finish. The landing gears come out of the fuselage. I am flying with 5 other
fellows now, something I never thought would happen in Roseburg, Or. We are building and flying. WE had our
first Fun Fly in Roseburg and 16 flyers showed up-great time. Go on flying lines as see pics. Dave has white hair
now !!!
