Profile Nobler, Is it Classic Legal?

Is the Profile Nobler Classic legal? I am asking about the one by Jim Harris on the PAMPA plans list. Or is there another one that is legal? TIA for your help. :-)

I don't believe it is. There's one sorta Nobler looking profile by Aldrich, called Foxey, that is.

There are several good profiles that are, and one of the best is the Dick Mathis Excalibur.

Rudy if you get the article from that Pampa issue and read it real carfull you will see there was some built in the late 60's and there were several with thick airfoils with ST/46's in them.There are two airfoils shown on the plans a thick one and a stock one, The thick one is not the one used back in 1968. I did a lot of research on this plane 10 years ago and built one with a wing gear and the thick wing. It flew very well and I was going to use it for classic at the 2000 KOI and I crashed it a few days before the contest. I do have the correct thick airfoil some where in my box full of ribs. Even the thinner stock airfoil is a good flayer.It was a much better flyer than my Excalibur profile. It is nothing like a Nobler but that name caught on and that is what it was known as.

Yes, a profile Nobler is Classic legal. I flew one in the late sixties, but the fuse didn`t look like a Nobler. But Dick Hanson here in Salt lake City built one out of a Nobler kit. But made the Fuse Profile right of the plans. It weighed 31oz. Flew great.

While my good bud Gordy is right, the question related to a particular design, by a particular person. I'm not sure that one was designed, built, or flown before the end of 1969.   H^^

My goal is to use the same plane in both the Profile and the Classic class, both very popular here in the SW.

Did you read Ed's post? He states that the PAMPA plan profile Noblers were flown in the 1960s ?

I like the idea of using the built up fuse. outline for the profile to be Classic legal. :-) Is this the same Dick Hanson that flys in the Dark Arts? If so, I have been to IMAC contests with him, he is a great guy and an outstanding designer!
     Do you have any photos of your "Nobler like" classic legal plane? TIA

There was a profile Nobler kit.  George Aldrich built one.  It had foam sheeted wings.  I don't know the dates on it.  As an aside, I recall seeing an ad for a Nobler kit with a fiberglass fuselage and foam wings.  No Idea when or where.

That particular Profile Nobler kit was done by Custom Model (Products, I think), the same guy in Texas who did the Buccaneer 740 & 746, and Forerunner kits. If it looked like a Nobler, it would be allowed, and even if it looked like an ImpAct, it would be allowed, because there is no rule that allows DQing somebody for any airplane mods or structural change.

FWIW, the Profile Cavalier is a real nice plane...PAMPA has plans...looks like a Profile Ares.  Tom Morris might still have a kit or two laying around. It'd be nice with a Magnum XLS .36 or Brodak .40 or RSM RM.40! Mine has a Double Star .19...<BIG SIGH>. The Dick Mathis "Excalibur" is another good two-fer, same engines. another choice would be a profile oriental which is legal. I would think the nobler should be legal to.

I do like the Classic legal "Twin Flight Streak" for a dual purpose plane. See Twin thread in this area of SH. I have ordered the plans and will see how it looks.  :-)

Thanks, I did not know there was a Profile Cavalier. The regular one is a beautiful plane, and flys well. The profile version may fit my mission? :-) I am trying to minimize the number of CL planes I need to build, and carry to a contest. It looks like there are some good choices out there. :-)

Regarding the kitted profile Nobler.  Bill Hopkins was the head honcho at Custom Models.  The profile Nobler was just that, a green box Nobler profile but no claim was ever made that it was classic legal.  Like all of Bill's profile designs it had the engine mounted inboard and a sheeted foam wing, They were produced in the mid 90s.   George may have beem consulted during the design or at least saw it and gave his blessing but I don't know the details.  They do fly well.  I'm finishing up a Custom Models Bucaneer kit now and it is excellent. Bill only produced C/L kits for a short while then moved on to R/C.  8)

I'll second the "Trophy Trainer" suggestion. A relatively simple build, constant chord wing, very good performance and very nice looking to boot.

Slightly more wing area than a Nobler so a bit more forgiving of excess glue/clear/heavy balsa.

I prefer flying my Trophy Trainer to flying my Nobler.

My two choices for a Classic legal profile that would also double for PAMPA class work would be a Trophy Trainer, or a profile Oriental.   The profile Cavalier is nice, also.
