For Randy Powell (and others interested!)
« on: June 22, 2007, 11:57:50 PM »
HI Randy,

Here is the Vulcan I spoke of earlier with the paint job from Hades!  I got so disappointed when the tape started pulling up paint all the way to the bare silkspan (I used too much retarder!) and the flap was broken when Aaron was helping me tape it off.  This was heading to be the best finish I had ever put on a stunt ship.......  :'(

I will spot the flap and clear it.  Like I said, it might look good from outside the circle!

And here, I was expecting a disaster. It's doesn't look bad at all!

I didn't take any "close ups" on purpose. y1

Bill,

It looks just fine!  If Windy can break a plane in half a week before the Nats and repair it so that
no one could tell it was broken in half, you can do the same on the Vulcan.  I know that in
every finish sometimes a disaster strikes.  They can be dealt with successfully!

Git'er Done................ :o ;D

  Hi Bill,
I feel your pain. For me every finish that appears to be going well ends up with a few glitches that spoil the end result.(Doh!)

Your Vulcan looks pretty sweet in the pics, even if you haven't taken close ups on purpose. Bet it looks awesome from 6 feet away. I'd just get out and fly that sucker!

 Cheers, Rob.

Thanks, guys.  I was distraught when all the spots appeared after removing the tape.  I had spent some time with Billy when he won the '96 NATS Classic with his and I wanted to build one real bad.  It has set now for a couple years since I just couldn't work on it!  It was actually coming out to be the best (smoothest) finish I had put on a plane so far.  I spent a WHOLE lot of time going over the surfaces, candleing them to find each and every little imperfection.  Then WHAM!  Bare silkspan in little 1/8th inch wide spots every where there was a trim line.  The finish on this plane has no filler at all.  Just clear Nitrate dope over 2 tenths oz. CF veil that I let cure, sanded, more clear, cure, sand until it was perfectly smooth.

I think it will look pretty darn good from 60' away on the handle end, but if it ever gets a chance at appearance points (our local contests do not use them!) it will suffer.  I just couldn't tear all the silkspan off the open areas and redo it.

I *think* it will be in the mid-high 30 oz. range and with a great Aero Tiger 36, it should all be up to me as to how well it flies. ;D

It will hit the air in a couple weeks. y1
