Olympic Mark VI ready to fly
« on: May 01, 2010, 05:45:42 PM »
Well, another Olympic Mark VI is ready to fly. I have photos but the file is too large to post here as an attachment; I just tried and when it rejected the photo it also wiped out the text, so I am writing this again. Built from a Brodak kit, the idea was to recreate Gialdini's 1963 model to the extent possible using his paint scheme. LA46 power, stock muffler. Brodak dope over silkspan, then Sig Lite Coat buty clear that may resist 10% nitro better than Brodak clear is reputed to. If anyone is interested send me a PM and I will email some pics. Pete, I am sending you an email as soon as I get this posted. Should be ready for trim flights shortly once I get the leadouts set and install tip weight. Model balanced dead on the design CG with the LA and stock muffler, no ballast. 49.8 oz dry. Not sure if that is good or not, but seems reasonable for a 560" model with a dope finish.

Pete C., where are you located to get snow this time of year?  Latest I ever seen snow in Missouri was in early 60's when we had snow and ice on April 15th.   H^^

What, it's not snowing in Kansas Doc? It sure is today in Gallup New Mexico, 6,500' msl. Still it  beats the storms and oil slicks that seem to be plagueing parts of the south. Mike: Saw the pics, your Olympic is definitely more authentic, especially paint wise than mine.  8)

I am sure there is advice here or on SSW on how to reduce file size of a digital image to get it to post. Can anyone direct  me to such a place? Or, tell me how to do it? Everybody and his cat seems able to post pictures here, beautiful high-resolution pictures, except me apparently!

Pete, your signature paint scheme looks fab on the Olympic. I only did the original scheme because of the mental image I have carried around so long. Plus it's really simple.

Mike,

There are a lot of free picture editing programs. My digital camera takes 2500x1800 or so pictures that are 3 or 4 gigs on the hard drive when downloaded from the camera. I use a program called The Gimp. I use the linux version, but there is a Windows version of it. Or you can use a number of other programs. A common one that some folks here use is Irfran. You can even use the stock program that comes with MS Office.

Mike, there's an excellent little program called 'Shrink pic'.  It just sits there in the background and automatically downsizes pictures (to whatever size you like) whenever you attach them to something, eg an email, forum posting etc.  Available free at http://www.onthegosoft.com/shrink_pic.htm

Thanks, guys! I will try the "shrink" program, and failing that I will re-set the camera to take more compressed images and take new pictures. Hope to have some pics up for all to enjoy in a day or two depending on weather and light.

Hey, that's pretty sharp, Mike. Nice and clean looking. Can't wait to give it the close-up inspection. ;D

Way to go Mike, much easier to view in the smaller format and your'e right, the last two pics are the best.  The top one would make make a great cover for Stunt News, or Flying Models, or Control Line World, or Model Aviation - sort of a throw back to the type of pics we used to see in model airplane mags during the 60's. 8)

Thats what we like. A TRUE Anachronism.

Who'd ever know it wasnt the 1960s there .

Definately was a bit of diversification in design back then.

AND , it WAS developed  from a    . . . . . .                        .

What I need is to get Mike Keville to make a painting from the top photo with the kids. Then we would have a shot at being cover art!

And Clint, if you want a "close" look at the finish I will have to confiscate your glasses first, or ask you to wear mine. It was never intended as a 20-pointer, just a reasonable facsimilie of the original at a reasonable weight. But it is getting better with each one of these things I complete.

HI Mike,

I love the pictures with the kids because they DO remind me of the '50's-'60's magazine pictures.  PLUS, they are great pics! ;D  y1

LOL.....I won't be looking that close! Besides, I don't don't wear glasses (yet).
