Choosing a new classic plane.
« on: June 27, 2011, 11:14:48 AM »
So, with most current projects complete, I've been pondering a new classic plane for VSC next year. I've got 3 sets of plans out on the workbench (possible contenders) and two classic kits under the bench. Plus, I have the possibility of building something that hasn't been seen since 1969 but haven't decided if it would be worth the effort yet. Take some real work for that one.

Just love this stage where anything is possible...

Well said Randy. Back in 1966, I drew up a set of plans for a Stunter. I was obsessed with the idea of a canard after reading an article in one of the model mags a few years before extolling the authors ideas of the benefits for stunt from that configuration.  I remember seeing that velum in my stuff, about 10 years ago.

It was a take off, appearance wise of the RB-70, without, of course, the delta wing configuration. It used a pusher engine, trike gear, etc.

I was not too knowledgeable about canards at the time, so it would have been a test of skills to get the CG, and the leadouts correctly placed, but it looked neat.

I showed the plans to a few of my buddies back in the late 60's. If I ever find them again, and they remember the plans I may redo the plans and actually build the plane for Classic. I'm sure the dated plans are around here somewhere :!

Sounds like yours is a better candidate, as you actually built it and flew it back in the day. Ain't this all just too much fun? y1

Ty,

Yea, one of the early contenders was a Jack Sheeks Scottsman. But the more I looked at the plans, the more I thought it wasn't nearly as good an idea as it seemed at first so the plans went back on the shelf.

Contenders right now (unless I get an inspiration or something): Another Novi I (the first one I built was a great flying plane that succumbed to turbulence and deceleration trauma), a USA-1 (pretty much the same story as the Novi - darned turbulence) or a Jerry Worth Mirage II. The kits are both Walter Umland units: Tichy Colossus or Van Loo Chipmunk (first more likely than second) or I may go with a mystery plane. Candidates are a Bill Mayo Raven (I have the butcher paper drawings and some templates dated 8/68 and drawn by Bill his own self - found in a box of stuff his widow finally sent me) or a Don Bambrick Ultrasonic. Either of these would take considerable work and planning since at the very least I'd have to take what I've got and actually draw plans you could build a plane from (rather than templates, notes, pictures, and rough sets of drawings). Then there's the whole getting folks at VSC to accept it as legal.

So, I'll cogitate on it for a bit and decide what to do. Fun to think about, though.

Ty,

If I do the Colossus (the odds on favorite at the moment) I'll either use an ST60 or a Magnum 53. Either would work but the Magnum is a bit lighter.

I wish Don Shultz's Avenger 76 was legal. I was looking at plans for it tonight and it's just too cool. Don has the gift for style.

Randy,

That's the same month and year I was born ;D.

James

By the way, I have a Colossus kit as well, trying to decide between that and a Caprice (have the wing from Bob).

James,

Bill was my cousin and taught me to fly. The Raven he designed is sort of a weird design. It was influenced by the Van Loo Mystery and a goofy looking plane called the Dominator. Kind of need looking overall.

I'm also looking at Don Shultz's Avenger. I have both Don's original plans and the reworked plans by Mark Scarborough. Wish VSC had Nostalgia 30. If so, I'd build Don's later Avenger 76 in a minute. Extremely cool design.

Randy,
If you are considering an unpublished design, I suggest that you read the requirements that have been added for VSC. You view them on the Cholla Choppers web page.

Tom,

Two things. I couldn't find the reference on the web page. I found stuff about the BOM and such, but nothing talking about eligibility of designs.

Second thing is, this is why I don't look at stuff like my cousin's design or other possibilities seriously. Last thing I want is to show up with a plane and be told it isn't eligible or that it somehow violates the rules. I know if I turn up with enough documentation to prove the design is eligible, I could maybe get it approved, but I'm not sure it worth it to me to bother. I'd rather just build something that is accepted and fly that without a bunch of acrimony.

The 76 Avenger...was it this drawing??? I used to have a bunch of sketches and drawing concepts for that updated Avenger.
A larger version of my smaller lightweight FAI model was the last Avenger that I built.

Don,

Yea, that's the plan I have (except mine shows a very slick trike gear). I also have your original Avenger 35 plan (and even the Seahawker   ;D  ).

I am just about decided on building the Avenger 35 for Classic. Should be fun. Who knows, maybe I'll build the Avenger 76 for Nostalgia 30.

Guess its time to dig into my old box of plans again for my old Avenger 76 plan form..

(if I remember???daa???seems  like I was going to use that old Bob Hunt foam wing that he cut for my 76 Avenger that I never got off the drawing board...
that I ended up giving to Paul Walker shortly before I retired from Boeing waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay back in 2004?

Since that time..that beautiful old vintage Hunt wing has found its way into more than just a couple of stunt grunt friends.
One of our fella modelers...AND MADE A PRETTY LACK LUSTA ATTEMPT  mount some pretty robust landing gear blocks into that wing that was designed to SPORT A FUSELAGE MOUNTED LANDING GEAR INSTEAD.

I paid forward that wing  to Mark at Stunt a thon this year.....(I would think that those heavy blocks could be carefully HACKED and removed without too much trouble?)

if he decides not to use those cores for another project?

Talk about long term memory loss... n~

Mark,

I may take you up on that (and our laser cutting friend - the ribs anyway). I may even build Shultzie's Avenger 76 that he designed but apparently never got off the board. I suppose I could contact Bob for a foam wing (Bob never throws anything away and probably still has the templates -  ;D )

Hmmm.....

Walter,

Am I? I only have 3 Umland kits. the Colossus, the Chip and the Stunt Machine (Nostalgia - so no good for VSC).

And a fine plane it was. Easiest plane to put together I've ever had.
