Wing for Profile Carrier
« on: January 22, 2007, 10:03:50 PM »
Following up on my post to Eric, and Ken's posts, I have a question:

I am fond of the F-4-F Wildcat.  I think the Ringmaster wing is very close to the Wildcat in layout.  How does anyone think a RM wing would be for this application?

Thanks

I think it would be too delicate for carrier.

cheers,
Ken

Bill Ken the wing on the ringmaster is not suitable for the f4f wildcat.it had a swept back leading edge.it is more suitable for a tbu-tby seawolf,os2u kingfisher or a so3 seamew -seagull.
Eric Ruel uses beautiful Wood in his kits.if you use c grain wood in the center section and hard but light spars there should be no trouble with. the wing.remember the heaver the airplane is when they crash the moor they ill brake.

I dont know how much the ringmaster wing leading edge is swept back only that the Wildcat wing has a little sweap back of its own. I was never a big ringmaster fan as they seemed to come apart pretty easy when contacting the ground. Ive always been a fan of brick sh-t houses and it has carried over to my choise of planes and how there built. eric

the true Ringmaster has no sweep back on the leading edge.  If you go to Carstens Publications and look under Flying Models Magazine I think you will also find some old carrier designs.  The AMA plans service also has a few.  You might even try Bill Northrop Plans as he still has the plans from Model Builder.  But, carrier today is nothing like it was when I started.  DOC Holliday

The RSM wing will be just fine. I used an original S-1 kit in the 70's for my Wildcat with a McCoy 35 R/C Series 21. I used the kit fuselage and added a turtledeck, shortened the wing (to get close to 300 sq. in.) and re-shaped the tail feathers to look Wildcat-like.  It flew very well.  Build it for Nostalgia Carrier and enjoy slider-less flying. Under the current rules, due to not having the LE sweep, it won't get the 10 bonus points. Build it anyway and enjoy Carrier.  Ron Duly

Thanks for the ideas, guys!  Just trying to think out some things with stuff I am familiar with.

Ron, adding a touch of sweepback to the S-1 wing would be very easy with the ply joiner it uses.

Eric,  Thanks for sending that page from MAN on the F-4-F.
