Sturdi-built Mauler & Corsair ie: J Roberts
« on: July 31, 2010, 10:23:28 AM »
So, I happend into both of these kits in the full fuse form.  Kits I think are complete.  Question is for these two kits, am I better of coping the plans and wood parts to build the planes and then selling the kits on to a collector, or are these not really worth anything  that way.  I think I got a decent price as I paid a little less than what the Brodak carrier planes sell for and these are full fuse which I prefer....I suppose even if I built from the kit material, it would be wise to make templates etc y1
I've started plenty...would be nice to finish something!!!

The tricky thing about these kits are the fuselages are roughly carved blocks, sort of like the Musciano kits. I suppose they could be re-engineered or duplicated but it adds to the difficulty. I say, build the Mauler (one of my favorites). E-Bay the Corsair. As you say, always wise to make templates. 8)

Note: Correction posted regarding the Corsair, my bad. Thanks Bob.  b1

Kits are for buying/selling and collecting, NOT for building! ;D
If you want to build a kit design, spend an extra day and recut the parts from balsa stock - it really is not that hard then you will still have the kit(s) to sell or trade, and the next person can do the same with it.

Are they valuable? Depends on how you look at it. All out modeling stuff that is now "valuable" really is only worth the same value as when it was new. For example, your kits were $29.95 when first intro introduced and using the Comsumer Price Index for inflation, that woud be about $105 in today's dollars - about what they would sell for on eBay.

Dennis,

The Sturdi-Built kits are a bit unique in their construction. J. Robert Smurthwait(sp?) designed these things with a fair amount of pre-fabrication.

For the Corsair, the fuselage skin is molded so it gives a sort of stressed skin construction. The wing skin over the gull is also molded. The leading and trailing edge pieces are carved to provide the right angles. Replicating these features in your shop would be a challenge.

The Mauler is somewhat more conventional.

Both kits build easily and fly well. Have at it!

Hey H^^ nice kits y1 I'm all excited now!!!  This is gonna drive me to add to the number of things I am working on at one time in my other thread LL~ LL~ LL~

Thanks Bob!! These are really GREAT. They are really nicely engineered kits, I do agree!

Out of curiosity, did J Roberts or Sturdibuilt ever have full fuse versions of the Bearcat or Skyraider or were they only ever profile?

Bearcat, Skyraider, Corsair, and Tigercat only offered as profiles. 3 out of 4 still available thanks to Brodak.  8)

After looking over the Mauler, I am thinking the Brodak Bearcat plans I have could be modified for a full fuse.....It would be neat   The wing is the same except the inner ribs are moved out slightly the width of the fuse.... ;D Anything for fun!!!!
