Before sliders did they kick the rudder out for low speed?

I'm a fered I"m building a kite with almost a 480 sq/in wing this thing is going to float at low speed and I'm looking for anything that might help keep the lines tight.

Yes. It was common for the rudder to be turned out during slow flight. There were a couple of approaches. One was to release a spring loaded rudder to a fixed stop. The other was to link it to the throttle. My preferrence was the fixed stop.

It seemed to help to a point.

Great, now all I have to figure out is how to hide 14 feet of linkage in a 1/2 inch profile fuselage  HB~>

Bob, you can actuate the rudder by using a small piece of L/O cable attached to the hook. Up thru the tail into the rudder. Thats what I am using on the current profile Guardian I am building, I use a torsion spring made from music wire and use a positive stop so the rudder doesnt interfere with the elevator. I have about 3/8" of movement. I'll try to take a picture tonight if you are interested.

Bob, attached is a rudder shot and also the linkage I am working on. The hook movement will be motivated by a spring attached to the brass arm. Hope this helps.

Gee Bob don't forget to put a couple A to A Sparrows on it as well, maybe an operational scale 20mm cannon :)

I think Sparrows came a little later on but maybe a pod of 2.75" free fire rockets and at least the nose section gun ports for the 50 cal MGs would work. :X

The first Sparrow prototype was tested in 1952 and it entered service in 1956. I'm pretty sure they were available to this airframe during it's time of service.

The standard armament for the FJ4
Guns: 4 × 20 mm (0.787 in) cannon
Missiles: 4 × AIM-9 Sidewinder missiles
Bombs: 3,000 lb (1,400 kg) of underwing ordnance, including missiles

F3D Skyknight early 1950's with (4) Sparrows
