Profile Carrier at The Beanfield, Dresden, June 27, 2009

Joe, here is some input for your postal contest.

This event was Profile Carrier, flown with a stock LA 25RC.

Demo flight - Paul Smith Hi 56.4 MPH, Low points 27.5, landing 100 = 183.96.

First place - Leonard Bourel 53.9 MPH, Low points 28.9, landing 100 = 183.80.
Second Place - Keith Morgan 56.1 MPH, Low points 26.8, landing 100 = 182.92.
Third Place - Walt Dordolo 56.2 MPH, Low points 26.7, lamding 100 = 182.84.
Fourth Place - Dan Birks 54.0 MPH, Low points 25.8, landing 100 = 179.88.
Fifth - Stewart Henderson 54.0 MPH, Low points 24.6, landing 100 = 178.61.
Sixth - Jon Brzys - 52.0 MPH, Low points 24.0, landing 100 = 176.03.

If you happen to notice the scores are kinda close, that's cause all seven flyers used the same model.  Other than the owner, this was the first carrier flight for all the entrants.

The model is an old slow combat plane with an LA25RC and a Brodak landing gear.  A hook was field-fabbed from a coat hanger.  The deck was made from caution tape and combat streamers.

The original object was to let some people who had never flown 3-line throttle control take a poke at it until the airplane was used up.  However, at the end of the day, seven guys had made 15 flights with not so much as a broken prop.  Everybody was able to do a high-low-landing flight by the second attempt.

Once the first round scores were up, it evolved into an all-out CONTEST, with slower-and-slower lows in a serious effort to move up the totem pole.   This big model, originally built for a hot Fox 35, now goes 57 MPH  high with the addition of the third line, undercarriage, and LA25RC.  It FLYS at low speed, as opposed to hanging and hovering.   Low airspeeds ranged between 24 and 19 MPH.

The bellcrank is one of those contraptions made up of two old steel bellcranks and it flys vel enough.

Paul,
         Thanks for organizing this event.
It was the icing on the cake of a great
weekend.  It really helped to make the
trip out there worthwhile.

Now all I need to do is retrofit a
throttle to my F4F's LA.25 and I'll be
ready for next year.

Cheers! Keith Morgan

If you look at those scores and factor in another 10 points for "scale like" or a Brodak kit, you're already good enough to eke out a 2nd or 3rd place at The Brodak.  And that's running a 25 against 35's.

You   could throw a small blanket over those scores. Good job to all. What is nice is when the scores are that close it makes for good competition and should make each of the flyers want to do a little better. That's what breeds more contests and involvement. I would think that all involved had a good time and would want to try it again.

No, you don't have to have a trick engine to make it fun. As I've said all along, a stock Thunder Tiger makes a great carrier motor and new they are only about $70 (used ones can be found for half that). On the right plane it can get above 90 mph. Also I would think that a Brodak Guardian or the like with a bit thicker wing will fly low speed even better than the plane that was used in this event.

Hope the guys involved are ready to come back for more.

Good job to all.

Paul, andall concerned, a big THANKS for the effort and the posting of the scores. One of the group has won the .36 portion of the Postal contest and gets the lions share of the prizes. Final results will be posted in this forum later today.
