Profile 2013 Build complete
« on: November 15, 2012, 01:22:06 PM »
Well, I finally finished my 2013 Profile Guardian. I have continued with the highly modified Brodak Guardian kit. Previous changes were a reduction of the stock span by the two outer bays, shrink the airfoil, moved the wing forward a half an inch and changed the stab, elevator and rudder to reflect the early production AF2S. Commonly called the "Round Tail version. It's equiped with an Irvine .36 ABC that has an OS4BK installed. It also has a standard Brodak three line system. It carries six ounces of fuel in a Brodak standard wedge ATF tank. New changes for this year includes spruce spars, 3/32 ribs and wing sheeting. It's covered totally with Brodak dark blue covering. I also switched to dropping the hook with the up line. It weighs 48 ounces dry. I will try to post some pictures.
Thanks

Jim, my only other experiance with other films has been Monokote and I find that it works easier than Monokote especially around corners. I seal as many edges as I can with Trim Solvent. This is the only airplane I have done so far that is totally covered. I am to old for paint anymore. We will see this summer.
Thanks

Nice job Wayne! Correct decals too. The change to the red bar happened in the late fortys so both styles were used on the early Guardians. Seems like if they were unpainted they had no red bar and if they were blue they did. Of course as with all military paint schemes there will be variations.             Mike

Looks good Wayne. I notice you are still using "The Device" for hook release. Glad it works for you. I may have to build my Brodak Guardian this winter, it's been on the list now for about 3 years. 8)

The Blue and White star and bar was used from 9/43-1/47. The red stripe was added 1/47 until camo started coming in. The first prototype #90504 was seen with both insignia in early 1948 which was pictured in the previously mentioned book.

Speaking of decals, it would be nice if somebody offered 48-star American flags so we could use them on pre-1960 models.

I didnt use the spring device this time. I changed it to a simple rod attached to the elevator horn so I could release on up. I think this might work better.
Thanks

I think you make decals/stick ons.  Anyway to see the 48 star flags as well as others, go to     www.law.ou.edu/ushistory/flags/       .

That is a great looking plane Wayne! I wish I could put monocote on that well. I have used monocote but I prefer Ultracote, it has seemed more forgiving for me, I think because it uses a lower temp to put it on and shrink it. I like the recessed gear mount.

Truthfully. I don't let anyone stand closer than 5 feet. So it always looks good. BTW it's the Brodak covering, I cant make Monokote work at all when it's time for a radius of any kind.

But the original question was specifically about 48 star flag decals, for pre-1960 models.  Plain old flag decals are everywhere, of course.

Mybe some  one with the equipment and expertise can take the photo I posted and do something with it.  Didn't realize how many stars and bars flags were designed thru the years.   Now if Puerto Rico becomes a state.  How would you arrange 51 stars?

There was a suggestion after Hawaii and Alaska (don't remember in which order) became states that stars be added for new states in the red stripe just below the existing star field.  Obviously wasn't adopted!

I've used Control Line Central for graphics. Emily does a great job and she's cheap.
She did these Gulf logos and all other stuff. She made a set for me of Chuck Tuckers P-63 with all Phillips logos and race numbers, different fonts, sizes, etc. All custom.
As a matter of fact, she made the Bridi logo on the Kaos in the background from the same sample that Charlie Aviojet couldn't use to do the same job. It came out perfectly.
