New plane Started
« on: February 10, 2015, 12:26:19 PM »
I need to build a couple of new planes, for 15 and AMA profile. I have always wanted to try the Blackburn Airedale. The Airedale never got past the prototype stage, but it is carrier legal. It is sort of the British version of the MO-1. The hooks were even the same, on the gear instead of the tail for the fore and aft lines used in the early days of carrier aviation.
It had a low aspect wing, for 15 profile an exact scale version has 200 sq. in. at 28 “span. A 36” span profile or class I/II would have about 325 Sq in. The wing is odd shaped but wouldn't be to hard to build. For my first one I’ll do a 15 with a foam KFm wing anyway.
Aside from a peanut scale version I never have run across another model of one.

Can't wait to see it completed.  Will you have it for Brpdak's?

A folding wing, well ahead of it's time.

Finally got some time to work on the Airedale. Dry weight is about 16oz, giving me 1 1/2lbs for motor , battery etc. Should be able to test fly soon. Nice thing about electrics is you can do that before painting.

I like it!  The shape of the wing reminds me of a girl I used to know.

Well the Airedale is just about done. Hopefully I'll fly it this weekend. I messed up the painting a bit, I used Rustoleum spray cans which attack the foam. To prevent this I coated the plane with clear polycrylic. Apparently not well enough, I skimped using only one coat so the wing looks like it has about a  flight or two in a hail storm

There is an interesting optical illusion with this plane. When you look at the motor it appears to have down thrust, but when you actually measure it does not.

John - Will you be at the North Carolina contest?  I'm finishing up a new E-Profile to bring out there.

It is a great contest, but right now I don't think I'll make it. I have a pretty full May calendar.  I admire your dedication, that must be a long trip for you.

I finally got out to fly the Airedale. No times since I was alone, but it flies very well. By the third flight I had it trimmed pretty well for low speed. It seemed to be at or close to the 70mph speed limit. Prop was a Zinger 8x4 pusher. On the ground it tach's at 19K+. @ 68amps. Battery is 2650 mah 4s. I hope it will be enough capacity, The plane is near it's weight limit of 2.5 lbs.

Hi John, the specs on this model are very close to one that I built several years ago. My plane had a Scorpion HKII 2221 2010kv, TP 2250 4s 65C battery, Icelite 50A ESC, Zinger 8/4P and weighed around 28oz. This plane would always go over 70mph (never over 71 though) but then would have trouble or just plane couldn't give enough endurance to get a good LS time. I built a new wing for it and put the battery's inside the wing and raised their size to 2700 (2 2s 2700 65C in series). I ended up with a plane that weighed 32+oz went the same speed and gave me the same LS performance. I have the same trouble with my other electric planes, when I get to a certain performance level raising the battery size (weight) just doesn't get me anymore overall performance. Pet Mazur seems to have gotten past this problem and I cant imagine how?  Eric

Eric,
In general I have found the same type problem. While I am not as good at low speed as you, I do think this model will do better than my previous electric 15's. To be sure I only have tried two before. One was a converted glow plane. It could hit 70 but it had a small wing and didn't have real good slow speeds. The second was an all foam which had better slow speed but couldn't hit 70 because the front end was two flimsy for a bigger motor with more power. Trim was also critical. Both problems appears to be fixed in this model, and being heavier should be better in windy weather.  We will see.

I got some detailed info on the Airedale today. I flew for a bit over 7 ˝ minutes, including 8 high speed laps and over 3 minutes hanging. Not all at the same time. I did 8 fast laps with a fresh battery, checked the balance for in the air, land adjust the Cg, test, land and adjust then did some hanging.
With all that I used about 1900mah for 3 take off and landings. Some of the data is attached.
All this tells me that my 2650mah battery should be OK, and while I still didn’t get a full flight timed I think performance will be very good.
