Walt, there are several on this forum that should be able to help. They will chime in soon. If you did get one, congratulations.
Merry Christmas

Walt,
Some ideas, though I've never actually had the need to try them:
1.  With the carb or venturi removed, visually note the position of the crank opening when you turn the prop up against compression in both directions.  Do the same with a known engine.  Compare.
2.  Turn it over both ways for the feel and sound.  Compare to known.
3.  An engine is an air pump.  It will pump air out the exhaust when turned in its proper direction.
4.  Run it on the test stand.
Mike was focused on CL racing, including Slow Rat, for quite a while.  So I would guess his 36 would be standard rotation.

I would go with #4 as its a sure bet. I've been using Nelsons with reverse rotaion cranks sense around 1992 and never thought about difference other than did they run in the right direction when I started them up. The beauty of the Nelsons is that you could buy one and it delivered the goods period, and it never wore out (well so far anyway) so in the end you were way ahead on costs for engines. If your Nelson doesn't have a reverse crank and you want to have one I'm pretty sure you can send it to Henry and he can install one for you. Also you can order some big hole plugs from him that will make it a little easier to throttle back and get into the hang with out the engine quitting. A Nelson with generous amounts of practice equals a top competeder.  Eric

Remove the carb and glow plug. Turn the engine to top center and install a prop pointing straight up and down to use as a pointer. Now look into the carb hole, and note that if you turn the engine in the direction it is designed to run, you will see the crank port close off at somewhere between 45 and 60 degrees of rotation past top center. It will be obvious which way is the correct direction and which way is incorrect. I hope you get the result you want!

It appears I have a winner! The engine runs in such a manner that it pushes the air forward no matter which way I flip the prop. So far so good.

I will take a picture of the engine and carb set up as it appears to be  Incorrect. It has a cl needle and spray bar and r/c carb. <a href="http://s82.photobucket.com/user/kickercoach12/media/IMG_0444.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j262/kickercoach12/IMG_0444.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo IMG_0444.jpg"/><a href="http://s82.photobucket.com/user/kickercoach12/media/IMG_0445.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j262/kickercoach12/IMG_0445.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo IMG_0445.jpg"/>

That isn't a carb! It is a Pylon shut fuel off used for dead stick landings of RC pylon racers.
You need to get a Perry Carb for it to fly Carrier. You will need to do some filing on the carb neck on the bottom to get to fit but that is no big deal. Use the shut off you already have as a pattern.
I am surprised it has a reverse crank, RC pylon guys don't use them that I am aware of.      Mike

Back in the days of 36 slo-rat we used that carb as a swing-weight carb

Thank you very much for all your replies. Last question what Inside diameter would be advised for a Perry Carb? Or just the the part # of the common
carb that is used for .36 carrier.

.270?,.312? or larger? Thanks  W Hicks

Walter, the last time I ordered a Perry for my Nelson 36 I got what Perry calls a special just for the big case Nelson. The package says its Perry 1401 with a .646 adapter. The 1401 Perry has a inside diameter of .312 and an outside diameter .550 that the guy at Perry fits with an aluminum sleeve with an outside diameter of .646. I recommend that you use this set up verses buying a carburetor and then shimming it up to the size it needs to be. after you get the 1401 with the sleeve you will have to grind or file the base to fit down into the crank case of the Nelson. Its no big deal and doesn't have to be exact other than you want to make sure the HS needle is on the top and NOT on the bottom of the engine so you can adjust it while the engine is running on the plane.
