Model Aviation Cover
« on: October 26, 2014, 10:24:27 AM »
Look who is on the cover of the latest Model Aviation! Eric Conley flying an E-Class carrier plane at this years NATS. When was the last time you saw a Navy Carrier event airplane on the cover of any magazine?
Way to go Eric  y1

My kudos go out to Erick's skill in flying.  As I remember, Flying Models several (4-6 years ago) had a Guardian profile on the cover.  I do wish however that the current MA had a picture of a more scale plane. Check out the discussion about this in the "Debate" section.

The discussion in the Debate Section is typical of most discussions in the Debate section -- and the very reason I almost NEVER read anything in the Debate Section.  I simply don't CARE what other peoples opinions about most of those topics is.  Now if only we could get rid of the political and racist comments in the OTHER sections, I might start contributing to Stunt Hanger again.

Joe, if all carrier planes look the same to you, then why worry about what Eric's plane looks like?

Bill, IT'S A JOKE!! And, I AM NOT REFERING TO ERIC'S PLANE! For the bazillonth time, I didn't like the picture on the cover of MA, feeling that Eric had more and better looing ships that would more readily promote Carrier.

I'm sure that the point of the photo was to show a control line pilot concentrating on flying his plane well.  The photographer probably knows little or nothing about the Navy Carrier event -- the person who chose the cover photo probably knows little or nothing about the Navy Carrier event and probably had no other pictures of it to choose from.  The model isn't any 'uglier' or less realistic than a combat plane or a clown racer, yet it and the Navy Carrier event get a heap of abuse from the other control line "prettier-than-thou" 'disciplines'.  At least it would have fit the 'builder of the model' rule.

Joe, I can assure you that Mike knows the rules for Navy Carrier. I think the "quotation marks" implied the sarcasm.

I posted this comment for the "lurkers" who may not know of the rule, not a challenge to Mike's knowledge which is top notch.  I apologize if Mike thought differently.

You know I was not going to say anything again, but, Navy Carrier as well as control line get a cover picture on the magazine.   Then a few people start complaining about what the picture was.   I remember Flying Models having CL models on the cover, usually a stunt plane or scale.   I still have a bit about 2004 World Champs in Muncie when there was supposed to be a carrier demonstration that wound up being a contest for the powers to be.  No mention from some of the people that went over to see what it was about an explanation of what was happening or why.  No planes for a novice to try.   I was tied up at the racing circles most of the time.   But, then again I was taught that a demo was supposed to show what was happening, not a competition.   Now my fellow carrier flyers can tar and feather me. The boys and I were very happy to see this cover.  Hopefully we have a Regional carrier event this year and we get to see Eric in person.

Doc
I'll take exception to your 2004 world championship carrier demo. We had several foreign visitors interested and coverage in the muncie newspaper.  I personally showed the guys from Singapore how we flew carrier . Not sure why the negative spin but we were located out front right along the road for all to see. A very positive day for carrier I would say.

John, thanks for info.  There is an "Urban Legend" about what Doc is reporting.  I wasn't there as you may know, but within days a local man who was there was telling us about the "Contest" instead of a demo.  Since then I have hard the story several times, but the person telling about it was never there but had "heard it from a reliable source".  Thanks again for the clarification.

If I can find it, I have a picture that was in the Muncie Sunday paper of one of the Guys from Singapore in the circle with me and my OJ-2.
