Joe,
The Shoemakers did not fly. The pictures of their planes were from a previous NATS. They were present and Everette timed for a while one day.
The first two days were hotter than I have ever seen at Muncie, near 100 each day, Unofficial day had rain til 1PM with lightening, which is why so many dropped out. I dropped because it was my 4th day and I did a lot of scoring that day, Linda scored the AMA days, but she doesn't know the unofficial events well enough without my help.
One major problem running a formal event at the NATS is manpower. There simply aren't enough folks, everyone has to help out in addition to flying, There was no one that didn't work at one time or another. This wears people out, especially in the kind of heat we had. Through the entire contest I only had two non fliers that helped time (one day each) and then not full time, and my wife Linda who did most of the scoring, and a lot of misc. support.
I did get some Boy Scouts to help setting up the deck, which was greatly appreciated.
