Dave Gierke/Jerry Worth Airabonita plans
« on: January 30, 2007, 10:57:10 AM »
My favorite Carrier ship to look at was the Airabonita that I think both Jerry Worth and Dave gierke had in the late 60's. Does anyone know where I might find the plans to one, or know if it was ever published?
Thanks,
Chris...

Let me know if you find them.  I flew carrier in the late sixties, and had a Airabonita with around a 30" w/s.  Still would like to build another one just to play with.  If I remember right it had a K & B 40 with a "ho"made slide in the exhaust to control the speed. Wife gave all my planes away to neighbor kids when she evicted me. HB~>

Yes, some of us saved "goodies" from the past. Who would like plans?  Let me know and I'll get copies made. Ron Duly

ps -  wasn't it Charles Reeves that made the model?

AIRABONITA By Charles Reeves, Model Airplane News, December 1967

Plans are available from AMA Plans Service; AMA # 26318 ( Pond # 55A7 ).

$ 8.00 + $ 5.00 S&H

The plan is scanned. The AMA plans guy can provide a factored version as well. All of my dealings with him have been great.

Since Lee was the most interested in the plans, he wins a free copy!  How is that for encouraging a fellow Carrier flier?  Send your address via private email and I'll take care of you. Thanks for those that responded with info about Steve Wilk and the AMA. Both are great sources for old Carrier articles and plans. Remember, Carrier fliers are happy hookers.........

I had the yearnings to build an Airbonita in the early seventies and had the Gierke plans but the real fun was going to the Bell Aircraft plant which was still located in the Buffalo, New York and begging some pictures, which they were more than happy to give. Three shots if I remember correctly, side, rear side and side flying. So when I quit carrier in 85 I gave away the plans and pictures. Real smart who got them from me?

Thanks Ron for the plans.  I received them today.  #^  Really like the articles you sent with them.   Now I need to cut an exhaust slide in my ole K & B 40.  Anything I can do for you, just let me know.

Ditto for me, Ron.
Thanks very much for the plans and article. I have a K&B 6.5 that might be nice.
Lee, did I send you a message about Ray Thiel of southern California in the 60's Carrier scene?

Ouch!  A 6.5?  My observation of K&B 5.8 and 6.5's is that they are speed engines, not "R/C", and they vibrate in the mid-range.  If losing a carb in flight is cool then they be s-o-o-o cool!  A K&B 40 or ST G21/40 might make you a lot happier but what do I know?   In any case, if you use a pre-1978 cross-flow engine, you'll get an extra 20 bonus points and you'll have a not-so-nose-heavy plane.  You'll also get 20 points for the plane.

Lee, how are you going to cut the slot in the case?  Do you have a jig ?  Ron

Hi Ron,  I just use a machinists vise and a dremel saw type cutting wheel in my mill to cut the front and back ends out of the exhaust flange. Then cut a shallow groove in the top and bottom inside the flange for tracking and to seal the edges. I make the slide out of .025 feeler gauge with a elongated teardrop hole to restrict the exhaust flow.  Probably crude for nowadays carrier, but its great for sport flying and thats about all I will do around this part of the country.  We have only one other guy interested in carrier in our group. At least we can compete with each other.
Chris,  as far as I know, I have nobody related to me in Cal. In fact, not many relatives left anywhere.

Ron,
I have a nice ST40 with an old carb and a neat little ball actuated barrel exhaust restrictor. I'll just use that.
Lee, Thanks for the note.
