CARRIER CONTEST REPORT OCTOBER 14 DALLAS TX Bill Bischoff
Six contestants, including first-timer Steve Moon, enjoyed a breezy but otherwise nice day, and made a total of 26 flights. Since every official flight earned a raffle ticket, most contestants took all their flights, and Class I became the "earn more tickets" class. David Russum also flew in Nostalgia Profile for more raffle tickets, a strategy that seems to have paid off. I flew JP Hanway's beautiful Sterling Guardian in Nostalgia Class II, giving JP the chance to see his creation in action, and allowing me to submit a score to the NCS top 20. (Ok, it got me another raffle ticket, too.)
We modified the rules a bit, allowing multiple contestants to fly the same airplane. My carrier trainer Hellcat, dubbed "the mule", made a total of 12 flights without so much as a broken prop, needle valve adjustment, or glitch of any kind.
Steve Moon did great in his first carrier contest, even if he did violate the spirit of the event by coming out to practice the weekend before the contest! Steve and David Russum duked it out in Sportsman Profile and Class I, with David besting Steve by about 4 points in both classes. Look closely at the scores, and notice that Steve had 95 point landings to David's 100 pointers. Now that's close! Both of them handled the wind well, and I suspect that they'll be hanging the slider equipped Hellcat in the near future.
David Russum was also the big winner in the raffle. He won the Spektrum radio, the Thunder Tiger 36 engine, a set of foam wing cores and Hellcat plans, and CA glue!
In the thank you department, I'd like to thank all the contestants for participating and helping with setup, tear down, and timing. Thanks to CD Patrick Hempel, and center judge Phil Dunlap. Also thanks to Michael and Curtis Pugh, Tom Hamblet, JP Hanway, and Wayne Cox for timing. And of course thanks to our raffle sponsors Bob Smith Industries, the CoreHouse, Great Planes Hobby Distributors, Horizon Hobby Distributors, MBS Model Supply, Mike's Hobby Shop, and VP-Powermaster Fuel.
