Guys,

It seems that the Hellcat has been overlooked---did I miss it, or has it not been done?

Thanks,

I know of two Hellcats - both profile. One is the Sterling Hellcat kit. Many have been converted to profile carrier. The second was published in Model Aviation (I think).  Don't know the date or issue but it too is profile.  Don't know of any Class I or II versions. 8)

Generally speaking, designs during the Classic Era of C/L Navy Carrier were chosen to have the smallest fuselage cross section necessary to fit the engine and still have enough wing to work. That's why many are modeled after torpedo bombers and attack planes. In real life they were big planes but scale down nicely for our needs.

To answer your question directly, a very good start would be one of the Guardians. The Bill Johnson design, '74 MAN, is an excellent choice. Model Guardians launch true, fly the whole performance envelope without a lot of fuss, and take a beating. There would be no issue with eligibility for historic bonus points.

A building partner and I started cutting out parts for a pair of Sea Fury's designed by Bill Boss yesterday. Ours will have nostalgia Rossi 60s for power. We chose this design mainly because the construction looks very well thought out (rugged). The intent is to "kit" the models and have all parts ready to start building as soon as the weather turns cold around here. I've cut out two sets of all the plywood parts so far. Here's a picture of them.

Beaware that the mounting and cut-outs are different for the Brodak 3-line bellcrank.  Mike

Yes, I'm aware of this. That's why the belcrank mount hasn't yet been drilled (see picture). I need to get the proper bellcrank. I have 4 Brodak cranks but unfortunately, not the right one.

Looking forward to your project. I built the Boss Guardian. Bill Boss e-mailed me verifying the design date of the Guardian. He proposed both the Guardian and the Sea Fury at the same time. Flying Models said there are enough Guardians so the published the Sea Fury. Cant wait to see it done. BTW my Boss Guardian is powered by a Rossi 60. keep in touch.

I have come into possession of a Sturdibuilt Martin AM-1 Mauler kit. Is anyone familar with this kit? Would it be considered legal as a Nostalgia Class plane. The box indicates that it is for a .35 to .60 size engine. It looks pretty small for a .60 engine.

Any info would be appreciated.

The Mauler was my first Class 2 plane. A McCoy 60 was the engine of choice, mounted upright. I bought the engine for $15.00 from Tony Naccarato Sr. Seems that some R/C pilot couldn't get it to run so just wanted to unload it. Came with an exhaust rotor and ST carb.  The not-quite-smart R/C'er had turned the backplate 90 degrees to make the linkage easier to hook up! That was an easy fix. Back to the Mauler: I didn't understand the instructions and pinned the tip supports backwards onto the building board. Not a good thing. I used the supplied Roberts bellcrank. I placed last with it at the '67 NATS. The next one (1972) had an inverted Rossi (same one I'm using today) and it was built correctly.  I built it like the plans said to (and didn't change the incidence). It flew fine. The 1/8" landing gear is prone to bending on landing. I'd use 5/32 and if you fly over grass extend it forward so it won't flip if you miss the deck. Build it and enjoy one of the best Nostalgia planes.

Kelly, the Mauler was a big airplane compared to the Sterling Gaurdian.  The McCoy engine was the engine of choice at the time.  I had one of those Rossi's and never could get any reliability out of it.  Too many flame outs at the wrong time.  DOC Holliday

Thanks for the good info. I appreciate it. I'll have to think about the engine. I have an OS 60 SR, but that is probably a little too mild.

Wayne

A little progress has been made. We only get together to build the occasional Saturday and we have several other projects on the go at the same time. Once winter sets in we'll kick into full gear on the Sea Furys.

Yesterday I cut out the remaining balsa parts and the aluminum hook holders are made. We should have the fuse crutches built next Saturday and from there it is basically an excersise in assembling the parts.

I'll start a separate build thread once we start the actual construction.
