Carb for G21 .35 Combat motor
« on: August 31, 2013, 11:17:11 AM »
I now have a G 21 .35 ST combat motor. It was set up for C/L. What carb do I use for this Nostalgia Carrier?

Is there a Perry r/c carb that will work? No G 21 .35 r/c carbs on ebay.

I bench tested a ST G21 .35 for the same reason.  I think I used an OS carb and a balanced APC prop. That engine had an extreme vibration in the low and mid-range speeds.  After trying everything I knew to try, I decided the G21 .35 was not a good candidate for Nostalgia Carrier.

Geezz Randy you sure took the wind out of my sails. I was all set for a big long winded answer and your saying wow, stop, the engine is not suitable. Well as I think back most of that era's engines all vibrated some just more than others. Randy did his home work and knows a lot more than I do about the G21 .35 so I'm not much on that engine but I can sort of answer your question. The Nostalgia rules say nothing about carburetors, the word is nowhere to be found in the rules section so yes you could use a Perry Carburetor if you wanted to. I like the Perry's and have used them on a lot of different engines and they work well if you follow the instructions. As for size, you measure ID of the throat on the engine your going to put the carburetor in and write that down. Then you have to make a guess as to how big the inside diameter should be that will allow you to make top RPMs and still give you a reasonable fast idle because you probably will not be putting your plane in a hang just flying it around as slow as the plane will fly. Now you write this mystical measurement down next to the engine throat ID. Now you move an inch or so over to the right of these figures and write "Perry ID and OD"and put your figures under ID and OD.
Now you go to Perry's web page and get up on Carburetors and scan down till you come the many different carburetors and look for the one that comes nearest to your two measurements. Oh, and if you want to look at the Nostalgia rules you can go up on   "navycarriersociety.org"   then go to rules, then go to Nostalgia Rules and you wont find carburetors mentioned anywhere. Hope this helps, it has for me many times.  Eric

To be very clear -- I had ONLY one G21 to test.  That particular one vibrated a lot, but OK at high speed.  I have no other G21 experience.

My preference for Carrier is for dependability.  So I stopped looking at converted CL engines, and focused on modern RC engines for Carrier.

I converted a G21 once, used a webra  carb as I recall. Never saw the vibration problem, but it didn't run well at low to mid range and flamed out a lot. Other G21's I have seen seem to have the same problem.
I use the plain bearing ST 35 currently, it uses an exhaust restricter and ST carb, works fine.

Seems to me that a G21/35 placed second (to a Nelson) in Nostalgia at the NATS. Well, there were only two entries.  Stock ST carb with exhaust wiper, no idea of the ID or OD, only that the arm operated the correct direction for the pilot's preference.  No abnormal vibration noted.  Sweet running engine.  Too bad the pilot couldn't find the deck.  Pilot blamed the wind - they always do.

Mine I got from Mister George Hubschmitt years ago.   Broke it in with the stock carb and won numerous trophies with it.   Even my son competed with the engine.   After Tulsa last year I tore it down and cleaned it up.  I think it is still competitive for sportsman carrier.   May not top the 70+ mph speeds but is dependable .

By the way I have noticed most engines vibrate a little on low speed.   Also most never fly full low speed unless you want to land. H^^

The SuperTiger G21/40 RC was the original standard of Class I.  The 46 RC was OK in the RC world.  I don't see why the G21 throttle system wouldn't work OK on a G21/35.

I used a SuperTigre CRC 35 in Profile in the pre-1976 days.  It worked OK with the factory throttle.

Thank you so much for all the replies. I now have a G 21 .40 R/C on the way for the carb. I was also given a NEW
G/21 .35  Mk 2 . It has muffler lugs. The Other one I have  says C 35 no muffler lugs? An os LA .46 carb will fit does it matter that much? I am a newbie so I don't have to win the Nats with it. These motors will be going on Nostalgia Carrier planes. Thanks again Walter Hicks

The Super Tiger 35 plain bearing engines:  Stunt, Combat, RC, and later the long-awaited Combat RC have a smaller venturi hole than the G21 series.  The hot tip in 1974-75 was to either buy a CRC or buy "stunt RC" and upgrade it to CRC by swapping in a G21/35 pistone y cylindre' and head.
