All new Bearcat, 10-day crash design & build project....
« on: June 06, 2007, 05:14:18 AM »
I was impressed by the Carrier event at Rouge on May 20th and decided to build something.   I studied all the material available and decided to pass on all the kits & plans avaialble and just designs something new.

After getting some plans for a few planes, I zeroed in on the Bearcat & Skyraider because I have first hand documentation of both planes flying.  Bottom line, I went with the Bearcat because I had already build two Skyraiders.

Like my 9-day Clown Racer of 2005, this is a no-cost bench stock build.

An ExCel Spreadsheet revealed that 1/12 scale, 1"=1'-0" woiuld do nicely, with a big more wing area to get legal.

I happened to have some MAN plans that I had previously scaled to 1/20 for a 1/2A, which never got built.  I stated out by breaking my "no-cost" rule with a 76-cent splurge at Office Max.

Found some old Balsa USA to cut, also some left over duck work to use for templates.

No hardwood for motor mounts, but scored an abandoned Slow Combat fuselage,  BONANZA !! a day saved.

No shortage of good 36's, and a few old carbs from RC-to-Stunt conversions,,,,

Looks a little more like a 'plane with some 1/16" balsa & carbon veil.

I lost a couple building days on a last-minute business trip.  Now I'm deploying to a two-contest road trip.  I was hoping to enter this in the Brodak, but I have several other events to prepare, so I made a hard choice to belay this one to a future contest.

Looks like a plane, but still two days worth of hardware work (tank, hook, leadouts, and slider), not to mention test flying...

Looks really good, Paul. BTW I really like your engine choice.

Cheers,
Ken

In retrospect, I chose UN-wisely.

I should have blown off stunt and pushed through to get this done for the Brodak.

Live & learn.

But I got it in the air...

....three flights, not entirely successful, but I can afford to be patient now.

It sorta worked.

Second in Proflie Carrier at The Brodak and Third in Profile Scale at the T & D, and still intact.
