« on: December 30, 2007, 05:58:34 PM »

Help me out here... its been a long time since ive scratch built a plane.. i just recieved plans to the Avanti II..
and the plans just show a root and tip airfoil... but no construction tips... or design.. I've thought about a foam core but do enjoy building.. so what type of wing construction would you all recommend.... the only one i remember is the solid lleading and trailing edge with an upper and lower spar... or the quarter or three eights square leading edge and trailing edge stock.. never have seen an .. I beam construction that i know of.. any ideas would be helpful...

If the plan tells you how many ribs to put in, you are in good shape.  Just send the root and tip airfoils to Eric Rule at rsmdistribution.com and he can laser cut you a full set of ribs for a nominal cost.  They probably will even have holes for a rod jig, especially if you ask for it.

There are a wide variety of techniques to do it by hand, use the search feature of this forum on cutting ribs, rib forms, etc. to find the threads.  The ultimate solution is to go with a "lost foam" wing as set up for you by Bob Hunt.  I don't have his contact information ready to hand, but it should be easy to find in old Model Aviation issues.  His videos are superb, and show EXACTLY how to use his lost foam technique to make flawless, unwarped wings.

Finally, if you have or have access to a good magazine collection, the techniques for rib forming are in a wide variety of Stunt Model articles and others.
Think S.M.A.L.L. y'all and, it's all good, CL, FF and RC!

I expect you got the plans from Tom Dixon, or at least he would have them. His site gives contact info to Jim Pearson, who cuts foam cores, and will do a fine job for you.  Email Jim at <ModelWings at aol dot com>   I'd suggest using one of the urethane glues (Titebond Urethane, Gorilla Glue, etc.).   D>K Steve

I have the templates for the Avanti and can produce either foam cores (With or without the rounded nose to accept molded LE caps) or Lost-Foam fixtures sets complete with leading edge mold bucks.

Call me at: 610-746-0106 if you are interested.

Thanks - Bob Hunt - Robin's View Productions

Hi Chris:

Yes, the Avanti II is the one that Bob Baron flew at the 1981 and 1983 Team Trials and at the 1982 and 1984 World Championships, ultimately placing second (Silver Medal) at the 1984 Worlds. It was published in the February 1981 issue of Flying Models. I remember this vividly because I had just taken over the reigns as Editor of Flying Models a month earlier and that was the first CL stunt model I chose for publication!

It is a matter of undisputed record that Bob Baron's performances at the two aforementioned team trials were among the best of all time. I was there and I can tell you that no one has ever done it better than Bob did it in 1981 and 1983! Some may have equalled it, but no one has bettered it...

Bob had an earlier Avanti that was a totally different looking design. Just in passing, I had an airplane that I named  Avanti way back in 1969, but it was never a noted model. I may reprise it for Classic however.

Anyway, the Avanti II is the one for which I have templates. And, by the way, the only entity that should be selling plans for the Avanti II is Carstens Plans Service as they own the copyright to the design.

Later - Bob Hunt

Chris,
I also do custom laser ribs. I usually set them up so that you can uses 3/8" rods, and have also done many that will use the rods and/or Lincoln log jigs. They can all use Bob's lost foam jig, which I highly recommend.

One note about available plans:
While I sell plans, (Blue Sky Models) from my large plans collection that I started when I was in my early teens, I will not sell any plans that are currently available from a magazine. I have many Flying Models plans in my collection, but I do not sell them. As Bob said, Carstens has the rights to these plans, I respect that.

In the same vein, my Blue Sky Models drawings, are also copyrighted.
