Wing Construction
« on: March 11, 2006, 09:35:20 AM »
Just received my Urtnoski Cardinal/Evolution Plans and must say they are nice and crisp.  The wing uses 1/16 ribs, 1/4'x1/4" top and bottom centered spars.  The first 3" of the LE surface top and bottom are sheeted and the 2" top and bottom of the TE are also sheeted. All ribs are capped and the ends of the open bays are filleted. The wing tips are hollowed block balsa.  The WS is 54" and will be powered by an OS fp 40. I am wondering if it would not be a good idea to stiffen the wings by backing the spars with CF or perhaps X bracing the ribs between the spars.  All tips and thoughts sure would be appreciated.

Thanks

Marv

If your worried about it just put balsa sheer webs in or email Windy. I've got the 60 version but I also got the 2 tape set on construction of the wing and fus. I haven't watched them yet but they usually give you all the tips you'll need.

Hi Marv,

If the construction is the same, or close to, the .60 size Cardinal, it is plenty strong.

Adding vertical webs as Leester suggests can easily be done.  I would rather add a 1/4"X1/16th upright on the side of the rib between the spar slots.  This, with a ply, spruce, or basswood BC mount which serves as a tension spar is more than enough for that size plane, IMHO.
