Wheel pants, How To?
« on: September 12, 2006, 07:19:25 AM »
I am ready to try and put the wheel pants on the Strathmoor gear, and I realize, I am not sure of a good way to do it. I have never put pants a planes gear like this before.

Can someone offer some sugestions, or pics of a suitable method of installing pants? besides one "leg" at a time  ;D

I was going to wrap the gear wire with some copper wire, not tight, but spaced a bit, and epoxy the pants to the gear wire. then fill the groove I had cut with balsa. would this be a no-no?

any advice will be apprecieated  y1

Adding a wire "brace" (1/32nd will do) to the main gear to give the balsa parts an alignment guide works very well.

The "spats" (part above the "Pant") use a piece about 3/8th to 1/2 " long attached to make a "D" shape extending off the wire.  This "locks" the spat.  A piece attached right behind the "spur" that the wheel mounts to locks the pant in place.

Spiral wrapping the gear works, but doesn't give much lateral support or alignment help.

Frank,
The Playboy kits will have this option. Thers is a laser cut piece of balsa with the "door" precut that the builder can use if wanted. If not there is also a solid piece of balsa to use instead.

wow, thanks you guys. I see I have alot more work ahead of me.  But I like the front half/ rear half method. would be removable, and with the wire brace, would be secure.

I will post pics of the progress I make. Still have more to think about. But I like what I see.  :) :) :)

I took a sick night tonight  ;) , hehehe,

 I mean...I dont feel good  >:D

You're welcome Greg..........

Bill, the door is a nice bonus for the Playboy. I see you are making it a serious model In the old days we always flew off of concrete. So I always used those skinny WW1 wheels. The door had to be there!

And remember, Windy has a tape/DVD devoted to just wheel pants - How to make 'em, how to make 'em light, how to make molds so you can make more of 'em, etc.

One thing not yet mentioned - - Be absolutely certain that the strut covers (someone called them "spats"), are really, really straight and true. Non-aligned spats can introduce a trim problem that will drive you batty!

Thanks, FRank!  A picture is worth a bazillion words.  y1

Anything that comes out like you and I have said/drawn is a good thing.  A person could do it about any way that gives it the "D".  ;D

Getting them straight and even in relationship to the airflow is the trick, aint it. I am sure its easy ince you have done it a few times, never doing this before gives me no frame of refrence. Thats were the pics came in. I can at least go on enough to learn a lesson, and do it better next time. The tapes from Windy will be a consideration after payday, good idea tho,  :)

now, off to the stinky workshop  :(

If you get the gear wire straight and alighned with the plane the pants will follow.

Bill, that was fun. AND.......it's easier and takes a lot less effort to tell Greg how to do it than it is to do it ourselves. HEH HEH
