What to use?
« on: February 22, 2008, 06:47:20 AM »
Hello All,

I recently finished covering a stab. with .2 carbon veil and gave it a coat of auto primer. I'm not sure which grit sandpaper to use? I know I'm supposed to try to remove just about all of the auto primer since its pretty heavy. I have tried sanding with 600 and 400 with the way the 600 and 400 fills up I'll probably go through 100 sheets just for the fist coat on the stab.

Should i wet sand the primer off or dry sand ?

Hi Steve,

Well, you want to use a non-loading sandpaper like Klingspor's Aluminum Oxide open coat stuff. I've also used 3M "Sandblaster" paper that is a garnet based open coat paper. But I like the Klingspor stuff the best. I sand with this stuff then use my finger to "flick" it and the dust just drops off. I use either 280 initially or 320 depending on how heavy the primer is. Hit it with the 280 (if the primer is thick), but don't go all the way through the primer. Just get it leveled and the bulk of the material off. Then change to 320 to get down to the final surface. If you are really trying to get it smooth, you can then go to 400 or 600.

Wet sand with 3M wet or dry automotive sandpaper.  320 then 400 then 600.  Sometimes you just skip the 400!  The first coat of primer gets just 320 wet sanded. the next one will take less.

Did you seal everything with any type of dope, first??

I did apply 2 coats of butyrate dope to the carbon veil before spraying the primer.
