Umland Chipmunk progress (pics)
« on: October 07, 2007, 12:26:23 AM »
While I'm at a standstill on the painting of the Sig Mustang (waiting for dope-N stuff to arrive), I thought it was a good time to start the construction of the Chipmunk that I want to take to VSC. So, here are a few pics of the fuse construction. Walter's Kits are unbelievable. This is extreme quality here. The fuse went together like a jigsaw puzzle and I barely had to touch anything with sandpaper or an X-acto.

While stuff on the fuse was drying, I took some time to weigh the sheeting for the foam wing. I think it's always a good idea to put the heaviest wood on the outboard wing. BUT, in this kit there is almost no sheet any heavier than another. All weighed in at 9.5 to 11.5 grams. The best I could do was to make the outboard wing 4 grams heavier than the inboard. ::)

Don' t you just love Walter's kits? The Cobra I built practically fell together. Very nice work.

Hang in the Clint. It's looking good.

Clint,

Did you use a jig when you built the fuselage?

Yes I did, but I don't really think it was necessary.
I'll have more pics up as progress continues.

Pete, thank you, but there was a copy of the article packed in with the kit construction notes. I've read it about seven times now. H^^

A little more progress. Front block cleared for motor. Hot air exit cut in and sanded back. Cowl mounts glued in. I need to decide on a spinner so the nose ring can go on.

Clint,

Lookin' good. I have an Umland Chip kit under the bench that I plan to build at some point. You are motivating me.

Oh, I see Randy. You're going to let me "show you how it's done" before doing you own Chippy. LL~
