Thinner Question....

OK..Starting using the Sig Butyl...Ran out of the thinner..Now the dang LHS is out and "doesn't know when there will be any"...so....is there any other product..ie..acetone,etc ..that will work with this Butyl...I can order from Aircraft Spruce, but I need some yesterday ...

Any info appreciated....

Joe,
Go to your local auto supply store that carries DuPont finishing supplies and buy a gallon of DuPont 3608S thinner.  That's the only thinner I have ever used for Sig, Randolph, and Cooper dopes.  It's pricey but worth every dime and then some.

P.S. I even use it for the Behlens and McFaddens' nitro-celulouse lacquer I use on custom guitars!

I'm presuming that by buytl you're referring to Sig Butyrate. As such, I have almost always used DuPont 3608 or (in the warmer south) duPont 3602S Acrylic Laquer Thinner without a problem. Available in your local auto body paint shop. Now I may have heard some rumors that the formula has changed recently, so ask around. My current supply is over two years old...

The 3602 has a slower dry time, less blush, smoother flow out.

OK...I knew there had to be a better solution than dealing with these 1-answer morons at the
LHS...I guess I'm just getting too old, but it seems no matter where you are on the buying side of a counter, the  "knowledgeable staff" just doesn't know very much anymore, and whats worse....doesn't care...OK..I'm off my soapbox...THx a big bunch....and of course , the next round is on me.....

I've been out of nitrate for a few years but used it when I was using nitrate for the first coats.  As to the most recent formula changes I just finished a gallon of 3608s that I bought last year and got a new gallon two weeks ago and all is still fine.
I've never used the 3602 but may need to this coming summer - how does it react with 10% retarder?  Does it reeeeeeealy take a long time to kick or is the application pretty normel in high heat/humidity?

The *reformulation* Ward speaks of happened a few years ago.  THAT blend is noted by the *VS* suffix.  DO NOT GET THAT! 

3608*S* NOT 3608*VS*.

From best I can tell, the *VS* is for the VOC compliant areas.  It SUCKS for using in any of our dope products.

(a pox on all the do gooder tree huggers out there........... I guess they believe the global warming garbage, too..... don't anyone confuse facts with money making theories spewed forth by politicians!  Our planet has undergone PROVEN thermal cycles since before recorded history and there weren't fluorocarbons around back then)

 It's just glorified laq. thinner.  Different retarders tossed in to change drying
 speed.

Wellllllllllllllllllllllllllll...as far as just lacquer thinner.....the off the shelf laquer thinner will work and thin the nitrate dope,BUT,,,on the Butyl stuff..it won't even clean the brush worth a hoot...So I'm kinda hesitant to mix it with
the Butyl in the Bottle..(Sig)

Any other suggestions are appreciated........

Hi Keith,

I won't argue that point at all.  I would guess that all lacquer thinners contain  the same basic ingredients.  But, I have a strong feeling that something other than just the retarders is as work.  I have used four or five "lacquer thinners" in the past to clean guns and brushes.  I can tell a definite difference in them. I found the Wal Mart automotive thinner to clean things up the quickest.  It is a green can with blk/white checkers on it.  It does a noticeably easier job of cleaning dope brushes and spray guns.  Labeled Virgin Primer Grade, and about 1/2 to 1/3 the cost of the 3608S.

For thinning dope (nitrate or butyrate) I have never had any problems with the Dupont 3608S.

I DID try some PPG when the local paint shop was out of the 3608S.  The PPG was *supposed* to be the identical match to 3608S.  I almost ruined a plane in the final clear coats with it.  The clear started attacking the colors and that had NEVER happened before.  Nothing changed except the thinner. ???

Well..OK...its 3608S for me...I guess if I can have good scotch..the same applies to the thinner!
