Tank Mounting in full fuselage plane
« on: June 13, 2006, 07:30:53 AM »
I remember Ted Fancher showing a mounting system where a bolt is run through the center of the tank and held by a blind nut on top of the mounts.  It means that you have to solder a sleeve through the tank, which is not a problem to do.

How many of you have done this??  And Ted, do you still mount yours that way?

Thanks!

Hi Bill:

I've done it twice...the first was the SV-40 (Vector) it work out well but I had to make sure the tank had shimming on the sides diagonally so the skew would stay in place (for nice cut-off)

The bolt mount needs to be very secure.  In the tank, I used a piece of tubing and grommets top and bottom to increase the solder area.  I used 4-40 screws instead of the nylon larger bolt that Ted drew in the TP.

I started with my Katana the same way but could never keep the bolt tight.  It vibrated around and eventually (250 flights) the tubing developed cracks and leaked.

THis spring I took it all apart, plugged the holes, and put in the ply clips and cross bars that is the typical mounting method.

A single bolt does not seem secure enough for the 7 oz tank.

FWIW

My experience was the same as Curts......Developed leaks around the tube going thru the tank. No more..... n1

Well, I thought I had commented, but apparently not.  I bury a fore and aft hook in the engine mounts and rubberband the tank in.  I'm not sure my soldering skills would do the job with the bolt through.

I used it without problems, I used a piece of 1/4" brass tube and put a small tin plate as a re-inforcement on the top and bottom. where the tube went through the tank. I also used a 1/4x20 plastic screw threaded into a hardwood block. Worked fine for me. hundreds of flight without a problem.

Yep...mine went about 350 flights before it began being a problem.
