Spraying dope colors
« on: April 24, 2008, 10:40:53 PM »
Normally when I shoot dope colors I spray right over the primer coat.  If you plan to use red or yellow is it better to spray the entire plane white and then the colors (would make it easy to make white a trim color I guess)?

Red and yellow are very picky about the base coat color...    White under the yellow will make it a lot brighter...    White under the red will tint it more pink...   Use the yellow under the red to make it brighter...   gold under the red will turn it maroon....   You can get some interesting effects with varying bse colors....   FWIW    I do tend to use the red and yellow more as tints rather than a solid color.  MUCH lighter   y1

As teh esteemed Mr. Lee says, the base color used (or blocking coat) will make a BIG difference on the final color of the more transparent dope colors.  Yellow being th eworst, and followed closely by red!

When in a discussion one day with Billy Werwage, he told me he uses a VERY light gray blocking coat.  It covers (it doesn't have to be 100% opaque!) and helps give true colors.  Windy use to sell pigment in white and yellow to add to dope to make it more opaque.
