Prop slots in Aluminum Spinners?
« on: October 09, 2006, 10:49:12 AM »
What is a clean, efficient way to cut prop slots in aluminum spinners? I can't believe I've been doing this for 50 yrs or more and don't have a good way to do this... ???

I have a molding duplicator around here somewhere. I use it then scribe a line on the spinner and use the Dremel tool to cut to the line.

It has a bunch of pins that you push over the prop and it makes an exact copy of the prop profile. Use a carbide Dremel bit 1/8 and take your time. The tool can be found at Home Depot or Lowe's or any other big hardware store. MOLDING DUPLICATOR

Even simpler - - Call Tru-Turn or Vor-Tec (Dave Brown) and tell them which spinner and which prop you plan to use; they'll cut it for you, and it'll be right!

yup,

Won't work with Veco or K&B! Are you using the Dremel bit that looks like a drill bit, or the one that looks like a wire briush?

It looks like neither. It looks like a cutter. I do not know how to explain it better.

Hi Ward,

The opne I use looks similar to that one, but there are more cutting edges, and it is about double the cost.  But it cuts cleaner and easier.  I guess it is listed as a tungsten cutting bit.  Not much work left for the jewelers file wit the one I use.  I'll try to remember to take a picture of it tonight!

Rotozip 1/8" TC-1 Tile cutter fits in the dremel and works fabulously. Only one I use for everything from stainless to aluminum to wood and they last a loooooooong time.

I believe RotoZip is the gizmo for cutting holes in sheetrock, etc., so I'd try Home Depot, Lowe's or Sears. I'd assume these are carbide. Carbide is brittle, so keep control of the tool and avoid letting it bounce up and down, fall of the workbench, etc. They'll break pretty easily, and aren't all that cheap (definitions vary).  **) Steve
