Original Nobler flaps
« on: February 16, 2024, 03:30:14 PM »
The Brodak original Nobler plan shows a two and three quarter inch flap at the root on the inboard wing and at two inch chord on the outboard wing. Is this correct or is the plan wrong?
Typo it should be two and a half inches for the outboard wing.

Must be as George signed it off on the plans and kit.  I flew mine at VSC one year. D>K

You might want to check into this and verify.  A 3/4 inch difference in flap chord is quite large.  I do not remember seeing such a large difference in flap chord on any Nobler version or for that matter on any other plane.

I would like to see those plans.  The Brodak site shows the plans are available but no image.  Can you post a photo of those plans?

MY BRODAK PLANS SHOW THEM THE SAME WIDTH..BUT THE 57 NOBLER HAS NARROWER FLAPS AT THE TIPS

Here is a little snip from the plans for the Brodak Original Nobler.
Certainly shows a radical differences in inboard vs outboard flap size.

your right i was looking at the 57 nobler flaps...these plans from brodak and RSM are not 100% correct especially the RSM ones....

While we are on the subject of Nobler plans, which set was used for the TopFlight ARF?  When I finally got mine trimmed it seemed to actually fly better than the Green Box.  I was lucky to get a light straight wing.  As to the different size flaps, that was not uncommon back then.  Just getting through the new pattern was more important than having a bit of roll in the "right" direction. With, at best a Fox 35 for power, the overhead stuff would become a religious experience quite often.

I think I have a set of green box plans someplace so I'll dig.  What you show with the larger inboard flap,  and in many cases with airplanes in the early classic period where the inboard wing might be as much as two inches longer,  is the case where they used little if any tip weight.  I just built two new classics that call out ZERO tip weight.  I built them that way but yet to fly them.   I'm a little nervous but I'll figure it out.   Bro Adamisin is making up some light lines for me so that may be the trick.   I think on your Nobler I'd make the flaps equal both sides and carry a bit of tip weight to start and go from there......

Here is a '52 "Original Nobler" built from the Brodak kit. The inboard flap chord is 1/4" greater than outboard. But it has a crazy 2.5" asymmetry, with inboard panel longer by 2.5". I did trim both flaps by 1/4" at trailing edge for full length. Oddly enough, the plane flys well. I'd be curious to hear some theories about how this extreme asymmetry actually works, given how modern practice (and even back in early 50s) is for even or slightly longer inboard panel, and typically slightly more area on outboard flap. It shouldn't work, but it does - at least to a degree.

SOME OF THESE CLASSIC LEGAL KITS ARENT CORRECT TO THE ORIGINAL...THE RSM TBIRD 2 HAS 54 INCH WING SPAN, THE ORIGINAL ONE HAS A 56 INCH WING SPAN THATS A MAJOR DIFFERENCE
