Great. The decals crinkled up so I get to sand them out and reapply new ones. What I get for getting in a hurry I guess.

You can clear over vinyl graphics.

Matt, it's been so hot with high humidity (95+ at about 85%) that I had to put some retarder in the dope so it didn't blush. But that made it too hot for the decals and, well, they sort of slumped. So, I peeled them off (not easy) and sanded down the clear edges. Reshot some white over the area, did a bit more light sanding and am in the process of re-applying them. Then I will use a bit of 50/50 dope around the edges and sand to level it back out then, hopefully, proceed with the clear coat, going very lightly on the decals and without the retarder. Hopefully.

Sheesh, what a pain.

Well, this thing has just gone to hell. Decided rather than accepting a very, very subpar finish, I'm just going to sand the thing down and start over. I'll probably get a better base anyway. Sigh....

Ooh fun.  You'll still get it done before I get my Legacy done, and possibly before I get to fly in a contest again (it's turning into a very busy summer for me).

The problem with electric is that once you get the smoke generator and sound system installed, the plane is too heavy.

Randy , I'm sanding off the finish of my Electra as I type. I'm sanding off the finish on the rear of my Olympus after a fuse repair, I said I'd never refinish a plane again but I'm doing it.

Hi John.

Part of the issue is deciding what to do in what order. I don't want to slog a bunch more paint on the thing. So hopefully, I can just hit the areas I need to repaint and leave the rest alone, more or less. To get the tone right, I will probably hit the whole thing with a very thin coat and just hit the areas I sanded through or whatever a bit harder. We'll see.

John, well, it will be better than it was going to be. I'll work on it until the weekend then I'm taking off for a week to go on vacation. Should be able to finish it up when I get back. I ordered some exotic clear coat. We'll see how that works.

Wayne,

Not really. It's show car catalyzed polyurethane. Dope is just not on right now. Apparently. Besides, I need to get it done as I've already chosen the next project.

10-4. I know some here use the stuff, but isn't it heavier than dope? I suppose the difference may be negligible.

Nice thing about Cat Poly is that you shoot one coat and are done. It's important to go easy as you can really add weight if you get heavy on the paint trigger, but typically, it adds about an ounce and a half. I had just wanted a compatible finish from the wood up. Repairing a combination finish can be a real pain. Hopefully, it will never need repair.

Best guess at this point is plane, ready to fly, will be in the 64-67oz range. Livable for this design.

So, the white is fixed. Joy.

I had to shoot everything - lightly - since I had to mix up new white and it's quite a bit darker than the original paint. Probably the additional pearl I dumped in.

Well, it's got color again. A royal pain but it's done. Needs a couple of spots of touch up, but it doesn't look bad.  Now it can sit for a week while I go off to see my son get married.

Thanks, Charles.

Wayne, 8 hours of taping in one sitting. The blue paint - move the mask, red paint, move the mask, gold paint and pull tape. Ugh! Now it can sit and gas off for a week while I sit next to a lake and see how much of nothing I can do.

When I get back it will be a small bit of touch up (not bad), lettering, ink, clear and let's go flying. Hurrah!

Randy,

Where can I find a good buffer? I've been searching but they all are too big. And the smallest touch-up ones I've found are pneumatic.

Not Randy but......

The Griot's Garage 3 Inch Orbital Polisher is what it looks like guys are using. here's a kit but you can buy just the buffer for about $25 USD less.

http://www.autopia-carcare.com/griots-mini-polisher-kit.html?productid=griots-mini-polisher-kit&channelid=FROOG&utm_source=CSEs&utm_medium=GoogleProductSearch&utm_campaign=CSE&gclid=CjwKEAjwjYCvBRC99sSm_frioAwSJACrKuPCyjbKqJqKIsFANVuNXlDg0biyI5FoqveQseeDkDhtGRoC_9Tw_wcB

I don't know if you use 110V power or not, Lauri. I've searched cordless and air powered but I still come back to the Griot's as the best way to go.
Best Regards,
Bill

Randy,

I have one of those buffers.  Pete P. borrowed it and declared it "wonderful".  You can try mine if you want.  Also, there is a Griot's garage in Tacoma on 38th street.  They have all kinds of "good stuff" including the buffer.  Don't bring money, you may not have any left after visiting!
