I too like doing the center sheeting like that.   Stops those little wrinkles that pop up.

Marcus,

The sheeting brings a good look to your wings, especially with the pronounced radius'.

That "hook."

What's that all about? Did I miss something?

After some advice from more experienced people, I dropped the clamping and moved on to the regular bolt system.
I have to say it does look "better"...

I got some tips for my "tips" and thought I could use some of it...
I added a soft balsa block and rough sanded to shape.
I still have some work to do on those tips, but I guess the final result will be worth the work.

Hi Marcus:

Looks like you are making good progress on the wing! I noticed that you are using some sort of material saturated with epoxy to retain the horn to the TE of the wing. May I suggest another method? Use simple (and light) custom cut 1/16 inch thick retainers such as those in the attached photos. They allow you to custom position the horn and then glue the retainers to the wing. They are extremely light and durable.

Later - Bob Hunt

Hi Bob

Thanks for the "tips" for the tips... ;)

Actually, I borrowed that idea from David F., as I have always used the traditional metal horn retainer, and when I was going to install the horn, I figured I was out... LL~
That is fiberglass+epoxi.
Those look way cool!!
That's why I love this forum. I have learned so much good stuff here...
And you may suggest everuthing you think would help me build it better, anytime you like!!!
Gee, when I come to America, I'm going to have to buy lunch for a lot of people... H^^ H^^ H^^

I was trying to decide between take apart or not...
I'll do it take apart, so I had to plan how I was going to build it since this is my first take apart ship.
Now that I've positioned the wing correctly it's gonna go fast.
I should have everything well advanced by the time I get my foam stab/elev...
And gotta buy a long 7/64 hex wrench or something, it is really hard to reach the hex bolts inside the tank compartment...

"Take-apart" to get on an airplane with?

Curious?

How precision is that incidence meter?

Well, I borrowed it and to be very honest, i didn't like it very much...
The digital display shows one number then you try it again, it shows another number, like a small variation of 00.1 or 00.2...
When i buy mine, it'll be the one from Robartm which is more "I like it old-school" thing...
But it's better then nothing and there's always the barnyard engineering eyeballing method... LL~ LL~ LL~ LL~ LL~

Been working on the wing saddle and have to do some sanding and stuff, but it's coming out OK.
Have removed the wing a few times and no problems, so I'm glad about it, as I see it, the first time you remove the wing and put it back is the ultimate test to check if one has done a good job. Next one is going to have the two separate panels, which seems to be the best option if you plan to travel and bring the ship along.
And I've got lucky! A friend has a Bob Hunt's masterflight set of stab/elev for the TG and is no longer going to use it, so in a couple of days, I'll have it here...
That is gonna save me a lot of time. A little luck sometimes doesn"t hurt, does it?

The balsa didn't curve. I used the top bulkheads to try to mold the wood. Not good enough.
You have to have a real mold to get a good piece...
After reading Jose's thread my concept abojt building a fuselage has changed...

You have to soak the wood in hot water and then mold. It takes A grain soft wood to do so.

I'd like to know how anyone can mold "C" grain balsa.  I go for "A" grain, usually 1/32 and two layers with silkspan between.

I did it Robert, and the balsa was soft enough. The problem is the way I molded it, so I didn't get a good part.
Next one I'll do it the proper way.

Marcus,

You through for CF landing gear!! Oh my gosh, that stuff is costly.

Looks really good though.

Any other plans for CF? Prop, spinner.

Nice but way out of my league.

Unidirectional CF isn't that expensive, and it's fine for LG's and all you need for props. Not a bad idea to put a layer of light fiberglass in the middle of a LG and on the tips of props, to prevent splitting. You can get some from Tower Hobby...look under Dave Brown Products. $6 worth should make a LG. If you need more, I'd go to CST.  :o Steve

Funny you should mention that Steve. I'm repairing the LG on the Olympian with some unidirectional CF. It has a crack in the middle which may be the result of loose mounting screws and the 15 or so touchdowns I made on that last official in the wind at the NW regionals.  b1  8) BTW: Good info on this thread, Thanks.

It took me a while, but I've gotthe stab/elev, and they are more advanced than I thought.
Already sheeted and LE and TE installed too.
Now, let me get back to work...

I got the stab almost finished, so all I've had to do was the mount...
Have to shape it a little better and stuff, but the holes are ready.

The stab saddle is done.
Now gonna work on the removable fuselage/rudder piece.
Already know how I'll hold it in place.
One more step ahead... 8)

Thanks Bill.

Been working on a few reinforcements for the take-apart wing, should finish later today.
There's still some work ahead, bur it's coming out good.
My main concern is adding too much weight, since this ship is intended for contests, so  n~ n~
It seems it's going to be a little nose heavy, but let's wait and see.
Now, should I go for monokoted wings and painted fuse/tail??
It ought to speed up finishing a little, and save some weight, I guess...

Depends on how much finish you put on it.   I have seen some come out lighter and mucho better looking than the iron ons.  Also may help your nose heaviness.

I've Always heard if you build'em tail-heavy, not good.
My old man used to say 1 gram at the tail equals 10 at the nose...
Don't know if all this hocus pocus is true, I'm trying to get the lightest ship possible and truth is, I've Always f#@* up at the finishing, adding too much stuff in the search for a great look...
I might consider the concept "Rat Rod" for this ship, like no painting, only details and clear....
<My friend Marlus has offered to teach me some basic concepts, so I can go on from there, but I know he's very, very busy, and don't want to bother him.
The idea is that practice makes perfection, so I have saved 2 models to paint before I actually paint this one, they'll give me some practice and if I screw up, I'll do with one of those, my son's ARF Nobler and one ARF Pathfinder, the covering simply came off...
I see Derek, Robert, and the others do it and get amped up to do so too.
Soon I'll be moving this thread to finishing and then, well, then is then... :-\ :-\ :-\

Marcus,

Great so far!

This take apart. For traveling by air? Or because of a small car. Or, easy to ship to me.  ;D

Gotta be one of those three.
