I need a good wing jig
« on: April 15, 2007, 02:18:47 AM »
I'm tired of using various sizes of balsa blocks glued to my table for jigging up wings. I need a good, simple to use, gets it straight every time jig. I like the idea of the steel rods, but it looks like it takes up a lot of space for sliding them in and out. The foam cradle thing didn't work out too well for me either. Does anyone here have one of the Lincoln Log jigs. They look simple enough. Any info on these? Availability?

Clint,
Check Control Line Central, noted on Home page for Stunt Hangar.
He has all the Tom Morris "stuff", look under misc building tools for the Lincoln Log wing jig blocks, and also "V" blocks for same.

Clint,

When I came back to Stunt after a 20 year layoff I had trouble building a D Tube wing from a kit. Same as you, I could not figure out how to block the leading and trailing edges to get every thing straight and level.

Lucky for me I discovered Tom Morris's system for wing building.  The first panel I built, ended up as scrap.
But after that small learning curve,  I can now build a Straight, Level, Strong, Light weight wing for very little money.

Tom Morris Lincoln Log system. Holds both leading and trailing edges. I've always had a problem with TE warps... Mr. Morris has addressed that problem.

Views of the wing in the jig. Board is the building board sold by Tom Morris.

Dick,
Do you buy the T-shaped LE edge?

Never mind I see now that you cut them. HB~>

Wow Dick, Thanks for all the pics. But, what if you're building a wing such as a Twister where the leading edge is a piece of square stock? LOTS of kits are this way. Can you get the jig blocks with just a "V" cut in them?

EDIT: I see from the CLC web page the blocks can be ordered with any cut you want in them.

Something else. This jig looks great for constant chord wings or single taper wings. What about double taper wings? If you build them flat like this, one side will be flat and the other side will have all the taper. Looks like you need a bend in the middle table.
