How to use Swivel Ball Links?
« on: March 28, 2014, 06:09:01 AM »
     Hi All:

What is the best way to use thes things?

Should I put one on each of the push rod? Is this being wasteful?

Should I only put one on end of the rod  and a "Z" bend in the other end?

I have been away from building model airplanes for about three decades and there is so much new hardware on the market today.  The old way was to place a "Z" bend on each end of the push rod and then splice the rod in the middle via solering after the correct length  had been determined.  I could never really trust lead based solders to withstand vibrations.

                                                                                                                         Tia,

                                                                                                                         Frank

Hi Frank,  for me, it's a matter of taste, but I use ball links at every end.  Considering the importance of smooth controls and the safety of the airplane, I consider the cost factor to be nil.  So, wasteful doesn't fit in my own thoughts on this subject.  You'll get to loving the smoothness of these rascals once you use them.
I do use a larger washer on the side opposite the horn to prevent the possibility of one popping off, just a precautionary thing for me.  I've never had it happen, but.......

I had that happen on a small ball link one time.   So I put the washer on all my ball links.   With the stand off I even put a washer there also.   And I do use ball links on both ends of the push rods.

If I used the standoff's I would use a washer there as well, but I never use them.

why would you put a washer between the link and the standoff? It takes all the ability of the link to move. I use washers on the oustide of the ball link, to stop the flying off if they do 'pop' but I never do that on the standoff side, as there's a horn there to do the job.

I use to think ball links were the way to go. But they are stiff and most of the trim issues are a direct cause of them. I saw Bob McDonald almost loose his P47 on year cause they tightened up in mid flight. I have sense went back to bushed horns and 1950 style hinges and the controls are 1000% freer

I don't know which ball links you have used, Robert, but I've never in over 20 years had one that was stiff.
Bob M. told me the ship got stiff in the controls because the wood swelled up, don't know, but that was a very scary sight to watch!  He did a marvelous job to save it after he fell!!

Well mine have not stiffend up like that either but they are nowhere near as free as bushed system I am using now. Check my plane out at the NATS this year.

As soon as I get them from the Laser cutter I will be selling those hinges along with my landing gear. The hinges also aid in the smoothness of the controls. But ball links do drag. Easy math for the wizards. Three times as much bearing surface as bushed. Also no more brass bushing on the horns for me. It runs through a plywood hinge instead. It will take a long time to wear out and is at least twice as free.

Its too bad that my Lost beam wing plane will not be done this year. Its going to have a lot of new (1960) stuff.

Our pushrods move both vertical and horizontal.  With music wire pushrods and brass tube bushings in both horns, the control system will bind as the bellcrank pulls the pushrod left/right while it moves up/down at the horn.  The only way to cure the bind is to introduce slop into the joints.  Ball joints are a more elegant solution, as they allow motion in all directions.

Re: Sticky Ball Links - I ordered 3 packs (30 total) of the Rocket City ball links from Nelson Hobbies a few years ago.  Of the 30 ball links, maybe half a dozen were/are free enough to be smooth.  The rest are too tight to use.  It's most noticeable when a linkage has 4 links, since the sticky joints are multiplied.  I really enjoyed cutting into a nearly finished model to replace the joints I could get at, the one at the bellcrank is still a sticky Rocket City link.  So far the large Dubro 4-40 links I've used are much more free.

I, too, have had stiff ball links right out of the package.  I bought Hangar 9 4-40 ball links based on recommendations here and found them to be too stiff to use.  I looked at some new Hangar 9 packages at the local shop last week and they were stiff as well.  My experience is contrary to Will's, but I'm sure he has had more total exeprience with them than I.  Is there a way to loosen them up?

The Dubro heavy duty ball links are very good.

Get some graphite and put on the swivel balls.  Do not use oil of any kind.

My experience was that everything I tried made the problem worse if any different at all.
