How do you keep plastic film attacded
« on: September 16, 2007, 11:16:53 PM »
I have covered a number of planes with iron on film. But I have never so far been able to cover to where the film did not come lose after 30 to 50 flights. Is there any thing that can be done to stop the creep of fuel that will last for years? I cover most of my planes now days with cloth and paint. They take longer to do that way, and it’s a lot more work. But once they are covered they last for life.
If you have been able to get the plastic film to hold up after many flights without coming loose would you please tell me the secret?
THANKS

I use clear lusterkote applied over seams with a Q tip. works well.

Use MINWAX "Wipe On" polyurethane available at Home Depot. Using a Q-Tip, apply a thin coating over all the monocote seams. This keeps the seams from lifting and prevents fuel seepage under the seams. I have a monocote covered 6 year old Banshee with over 475 flights and the covering is still sealed with no fuel soaking. I also have a 4 year old Ultracote covered Pathfinder II with over 400 flights, see attached picture, and it is also still in fine shape.

Dennis,
I don't recall, but is the fuse painted or monocoted?

Alan,
The Banshee fuselage is covered with monocote while the Pathfinder fuselage is painted with Lustercote. After 6 years the Banshee fuselage monocote has some wrinkles and bubbles but the seams are still sealed.

One thing I dont see mentinoed that is very important, that being to keep the seams as much as possible with the overlaps in a direction that does not enable fuel creeping. In other words, start from the aft and work forward, the bottom and work up to the top
For years the rat race had me going around in circles, Now I do it for fun!
