Goldberg Gentle Lady Sail Plane
« on: June 18, 2009, 11:03:25 AM »
I am 99% control line oriented but have just bought a Goldberg Gentle Lady sailplane kit.  I want to mount either a Norvel .061 or maybe a Wasp .049 on the nose or on a Pod.  I have flown RC before but never a Sail Plane.  If anyone has ever had experience with mounting enginges on sail planes (2 meter size) could you give me some advice on which engine would be the best fit for this plane and where would you mount it on a pod or on the nose (the plane will accept either)  I am not going to use electric on this plane. Oh, and how and where would you mount a small tank for the engine?  I have a one ounce.

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

Mike

Hi Mike,

Back in the '80s I built this neat beginners sail plane and I had a ball with it just flying off hills in morning lift.

To answer your question:  Goldberg used to offer a self contained pod ( for small gas eng.) that you could mount on top of the wing piggy back style that was held by the rubberbands that held the wing on.   This mount was for a COX baby bee but one could have easily retro-fitted for a beam mount eng. like the WASP.  For this size plane you could use either the.049 0r the .061 depending on the wind conditions.

I don't know that the Goldberg unit could still be found but a similar one could could be made up for this application.

Regards,

James Dean

This is a couple of power pods that ride on top of the wing center joint under the rubber bands. The larger one is a Sig item that I built. I used it on a Great planes Spirit which is today's version of the Gentle Lady. I ran a medallion .049, and it was minimal. The smaller one is a pretty common item on eBay, but I'm not sure who manufactures it. I like the Hi-Start launcher myself. It's like flying Remote Control line.

The power pod I used was a SIG kit that I used on the Sig Riser and the Goldberg Gentlelady.  Engine was a Medallion .049 on a TeeDee tank mount.  A Golden Bee could be bolted in place also.  DOC Holliday

Here is what I have used in the past.. this one is made for a 1.5 Meter Glider (60").. The original was from RCM plans and was designed for 2 meter gliders.. the Gentle Lady was one of the profiles used in the original article from  20 plus years ago.. I think the Riser and Wanderer were the other two.. I have the copies some where.. I'll look for them if you want.. The 049 sized one has balsa blocking behind the engine to support the engine mount.. an 049 will haul the glider up fine.. the TD 020 was a bit more power than I needed on my HLG a design from Model Builder called the Tossett.. man, it would thermal.. The Gentle Lady is a fine "floater.. I love that plane.

I see RCM had this article .. Gentle Lady Power Pod - 12/85 (102) I believe this is the one I have copies of.. I just saw it recently.. so I know I can find it.. all ply and mine was built over 20 years ago and is still in great condition..

I used a Cox QRC .049 .. a TD will haul it up there right now... The Black Widow .049 is perfect... and the Golden Bee if a great choice. I highly recommend Cox Fuel in their engines..

here is one from Tower Hobbies

Here is an article and comments on a Gentle Lady with electric powerpod

This one is on ebay

Back in the early 80s there was an all plastic one like this made for TD .049-.051 it will haul a 100" glider up there .. and you could use a one oz tank..

Here is the PDF on the Gentle Lady and show a power pod installation about 2/3 down the page.
