Folded Silkspan
« on: March 10, 2009, 06:58:46 PM »
Gentlemen,

I have several sheets of Silkspan that came with kits.  The Silkspan sheets are folded.

This causes a problem when I attempt to put the folded sheets on flat surfaces such as a wing.

Can you iron the folds out of the Silkspan?

Are there any other methods to get the creases out of the Silkspan?

You can iron silkspan, but keep it at a cooler setting. It can be steam ironed and that's more effective the dry. Any shrinkage caused will not matter if you cover wet.

Are you putting it on dry?, if so try putting it on wet. The creases usually pull out as the silkspan shrinks during drying. If the material is very, very old or creased sharply this may not work but it's worth a try.  8)

I never could get the technique down for covering wit dry silkspan, so I have been covering *wet* for about 45 years! LL~  And, the wrinkles aways came out of the folded silkspan when it was wet.
