What Ty said. I have used them that way for years without problems, and they do dissappear. I put about 3 coats of dope where the hinges will go, and then use very thin dope to apply the hinges to the elevator. Then line up the hinges with the stab, and dope them down. I also use a couple of pieces of 1/16" balsa and clothspins to hold the elevator and stab together at the tips while doping the hinges down. The Tom Morris hinges are the best I have ever used.

I am building a Baby Clown.  I decided to do an experiment and used Polyspan for my hinges.  1" wide strips doped down in the usual over/under fashion.  With Silkspan over them, the hinges really will disappear!  I did the full length of the elevator, so I expect it to be plenty strong.  The only question is durability, as fatigue or vibration might do them in.  Gotta admit that since the hinges were done from scraps, the price is right!  ;D
Think S.M.A.L.L. y'all and, it's all good, CL, FF and RC!
