Custom bent wire gear.
« on: March 19, 2014, 06:12:47 PM »
Because I always have a small bit of difficulty bending wire gear, I now draw the complete gear on paper as a guide. I also have a small length of the same diameter wire for a test bend.

This way I make no errors. Especially with the test bends.

Used this method for the Mig-3 and for this nameless model that was once The New American.

Any other "tips" that will assure a no error set of wire gears?

Here's my set I bent just tonight.

Edited for more information.

Tim,

Yes, I should have mentioned the bender, by Harry Higley. Makes the coil for R/C nose gears also.

Correct, toss the mistakes. I've done plenty of that.

Thanks for the replies.

If there's no funky twists or strange angles, I usually tape two wires together and bend them as a pair. That way, even if they're slightly incorrect, they're consistently incorrect.

Use a bender -- I think you're already doing that.

Be willing to throw away bad attempts.

I usually make my first leg to the drawing, then I make the second leg to the first.  I seem to be able to match a real article better (even if I have to mirror it) than I can a flat drawing.

The problem with electric is that once you get the smoke generator and sound system installed, the plane is too heavy.

I was trying to get a bit more organized, looking through and arranging my stuff.

A time back, I put aside a Robart Warbird strut set for the Mig-3, remember the Mig-3?

Bam! I noticed I had a second Robart strut set. Why not use it for this nameless model once called The New American?

I like Robart struts. Lots of pieces but you don't have to use all of them. The added grams could be worth the look? I’m thinking Warbird scheme anyway and I love Warbirds.

Sooooo, with a little bit of fine tuning, I managed to fit the wire gear into the Robart struts.

Well, one does have to play with each bend. Wish I knew I had this extra strut set before I bent the gear, would have been somewhat easier.

My newly bent wire gear happy in their Robart struts.

Creating more work for myself. Isn’t that how it is.

Forgot to mention that the Robart plastic strut, I'll weigh them when I get a chance, gets trimmed off at the axel, shown here with the circle.

I'll be back with more info on the Robart strut.

WOW!

Can't believe how this Thread has "taken off."  LL~ LL~

One assembled, but not really, Robart Strut. Port side. Certainly worth the extra weight? Maybe.   n1

It will be a bit more challenging attaching gear doors to these plastic struts. I noticed CA doesn't work well on the plastic mix that Robart uses. Plastic model glue?

Gotta figure that one out.

I'll need gear doors eventually.

Anyone else use plastic Robart struts?

I guess, what was the New American, is becomming a Warbird.  ;D

You fly heavy planes without Robart struts.

What's the Avenger, 62 oz?

What are you building?

Where's your Build Thread?

I used the Robart strut covers on this about seven years ago.  No problem.  The gear doors are held on with nylon control horns and LG brackets.   The nylon gives the necessary give.

Paul,

Great looking model!

Nice pen work. I plan on trying that.

First time I've seen a CL stunt model with the wheel wells cut out. I like that and will keep that in mind.

Hard spots also!

Any other photos of this model?

Thanks for the reply.

The Avenger is not heavy, its a big airplane,, its not a lightweight, but certainly not heavy,,
I am building a new PA airplane,, not ready for display yet,, its in "stealth mode"

and my 109 was not heavy,, it was actually light for its size,, 670 square inches,, and 63 ounces ready to fly,,
my electra jet was not heavy,,
all these have flown,, yours,, not so much
For years the rat race had me going around in circles, Now I do it for fun!

"Stealth mode."

Interesting.

I also have a new project in "Klingon Cloaking Mode."

Currently I'm in the design stage with it, but it will be a faster build, this one I really want to get done.

The Bearcat is not a stunter.  It's for profile scale.  The actual wheel wells were made in the hope of getting a better scorce from alert judges.

This later picture includes the fully-hinged control surfaces in lieu of ink lines.  Also the clear canopy with pilot, another upgrade from frequent profile practice.   The model has served me well until multi-engine has become the norm.

Paul,

Do I see stiching on the elevator? Adjustible ailerons? Nice tank detail!

Are you saying it's uncommon to see single engine models competing in profile scale? And if they do are considered second fiddle?

So, I'm guessing the model has awards to it's credit? Well, your credit actually.

I do not see any problem with what he's doing. If he never fly's a single plane he is doing what he likes. I build as fast with accuracy as anyone and I have no issue with his stuff. I can learn from anyone. It just takes the right frame of mind.

Robert,

Hey, hey! What a surprise!

I'll tell you what I'm doing and it's obvious.

I'm contributing to your Forum as I have been for years.

You cannot fly a model that's not finished.

For anyone interested, I will finish a model and fly it. Probably this nameless New American.

And if I just hang the thing it on my wall, then so be it. It's my model and it's my wall.

Robert, you are absolutely correct, I'm having a great time doing what I like.

Thank you for this outstanding "World Class" Forum!

And thank you also for the opportunity for me to share my modeling interests.
