I'm considering patterning it after the plane flown by Major Boyington in the South Pacific.

Sam,
I also answered your question on SSW, but that was before I learned more info over here.
Are you are trying to copy the plane called "Lulubelle" (VMF-124, number 86)?
That plane was painted in the old Navy three color camo, which went from semi gloss Sea Blue (FS 25042), down to Intermediate Blue (FS 35164), finally to a Light Gray (FS 36492). These were the typical WW2 colors. This was also the time period (June - September, 1943) when we had the red outline around the national insignia. As Ty mentioned, all of these colors faded quickly in the South Pacifc.
In September, when we changed to the white outline, the Navy also changed the camo to an overall gloss Sea Blue (FS 15042).
My sources also say the Navy didn't use white on the insignia. They mixed 1:1 white and gray to soften the color.
Anyway - unless you are planning to enter any competition, you can fudge as much as you like and still enjoy the plane. As I mentioned over on SSW, there are no Brodak colors that match any of these very well. Sea Blue is darker than Insignia Blue; Intermediate Blue is much grayer than anything in the Brodak catalogue, and the Light Gray is lighter than Brodak's Platinum Gray.
Hope this helps,
Ron
