I'm building a f4u corsair and finishing it with Brodak dope.  Anyone which Brodak blue is the right one for the Corsair?

What vintage of the Corsair are you wanting to depict?  They were in three different schemes that I know of.

1. non specular sea blue (flat blue that has a slight grayish tint)/gray

2. dark sea blue/intermediate blue (light blue like Carolina Blue almost)/white (all flat)

3. gloss sea blue. (pretty dark gloss blue)

I'm considering patterning it after the plane flown by Major Boyington in the South Pacific.

Is this a scratch build or a kit? If a kit which one. If plans build which one and where did you get it.  Thanks

Rudderless,

Yes that's me.  I haven't checked SSW yet.  To answer your question.

This is actually an RC kit by Great Planes.  It's 40 size and wouldn't be hard to convert to CL although I'm building it for RC.  John Brodak will have a profile Corsair coming out later this year or early next year.  I posted the question here rather than on an RC site because I thought I would get a more accurate/complete answer and I was right.  Thanks.

Sam,

I also answered your question on SSW, but that was before I learned more info over here.

Are you are trying to copy the plane called "Lulubelle" (VMF-124, number 86)?

That plane was painted in the old Navy three color camo, which went from semi gloss Sea Blue (FS 25042), down to Intermediate Blue (FS 35164), finally to a Light Gray (FS 36492). These were the typical WW2 colors. This was also the time period (June - September, 1943) when we had the red outline around the national insignia. As Ty mentioned, all of these colors faded quickly in the South Pacifc.

In September, when we changed to the white outline, the Navy also changed the camo to an overall gloss Sea Blue (FS 15042).

My sources also say the Navy didn't use white on the insignia. They mixed 1:1 white and gray to soften the color.

Anyway - unless you are planning to enter any competition, you can fudge as much as you like and still enjoy the plane. As I mentioned over on SSW, there are no Brodak colors that match any of these very well. Sea Blue is darker than Insignia Blue; Intermediate Blue is much grayer than anything in the Brodak catalogue, and the Light Gray is lighter than Brodak's Platinum Gray.

Hope this helps,

Ron

Let us know how the build goes. Pics would be great, I have the same kit but haven't started it yet.  Good Luck

Thanks everyone.  For now I'm just trying to get the base blue as close as I can.  I haven't picked out a specific plane to model.  I'll put on some pics when completed.

Thanks again.

Thanks for the Federal Standard numbers Ron.
The intent of the odd shape of the various colors was for the blue to be seen from above, thus blending with the cobalt blue of most of lthe Pacific.  You have to see it to believe that blue.  ;D

Ty,

Been there - seen it. Totally beautiful.  #^

I spent three years as a commercial deep sea diver (mixed gas, etc.) and saw the ocean from several different perspectives.

Thanks for reminding me.  <=
