Roger,
I use deep sea wire fishing trace rated at 100lbs which seems ample to me. Others I know use anything from 018 control line to bicycle brake cable (500lbs+)!! which I think is bit of over the top..

I suspect that whatever you're using for control line would be adequate, but would wear rapidly (and be harder to change than line).

So going to something heavier should just be a matter of personal choice, and where you want to be on the convenience vs. lifetime spectrum.

The problem with electric is that once you get the smoke generator and sound system installed, the plane is too heavy.

E-Z Just handles will not tke 200 pound pull.  They wouldn't even hold up in fast rat in the later years.  Ask the guys that are trying to control a rat with just the cable left after the plastic shattered.  Get a hold of Melvin at MBS Model Supply and he will fix you up with the proper cable for handles.  H^^

I ordered cable from Cabela's...fishing leader. Sevenstrand stainless steel cable in every size up to handle size. The heavy stuff is still on the pegboard in the shop. Holla if you want it. I'm a solid believer in hardpoint handles.  y1 Steve

Yeah !!!    When I stopped flying C/L in the 70's, the two handles I used most were my EZ Just, and my Hot Rock.  Now I'm looking at what you guys are using today and I'm confused.  What the heck kind of handles are you guys using these days.  They used to be simple.  I'm not sure they still are.  Got to have quick & easy adjustability, for sure, and I guess I can live with the thong deal.  But the pictures I've seen look a little strange.  I guess I'm ignorant and it's showing.  Any help out there ? Hi Dan,

I like the KISS concept---straight grip, hardpoint; several designs provide those features.  Tom Morris makes a handle "kit" as does Carl Shoupe (spelling).  Carl's handle is to Ted Fancher's design.

I like a set of lines and handle dedicated to each model, with the lines designated as to "up line" and "down line";  always hook'em up the same way........

Cheers,

Another hint I got from Alan Brickhaus'  Flying Models column.   Get Zip Loc bags for each of your handle/line combo's.  Magic Marker to mark the bag as to what plane they are for.  Sure makes life simple.   H^^

Hi, Dan.  Welcome back.

Hello Howard !

Amazing who you meet on these forums.  Long time no see.  Hope you are well.  Nostalgia has made me take a break from pattern and go back to my roots.  Just bought a Magician kit to build. See if I can remember how to fly these things. Might be able to handle something SLOW.  Not ready for a G21/35 combat machine.  Probably never will be.  Those days are gone forever.  Thanks for your "welcome back".

So how do you adjust for line length differences between the up & down line with a hard point handle ?  It's been a long time but I don't remember being able to make up a set of lines exactly even length for both lines.  My Hot Rock handle would adjust to compensate for the difference in line length and maybe lead out length difference.

Hi Dan,

Since Sir Howard of Rush knows you from the days of yore, you must know how to "fly".  So we won't insult your intelligence! ;D

There is nothing wrong with still using the E-Z Just or Hot Rock.  Just have good cables in them.  Al Rabe is still using the Hot Rock!

As to line adjustments on a "Hard Point":  you have to make up different length "clips" to attach the lines.  This can be easy or tough depending on your state of mind. ;D

Hi Bill

So is the EZ-Just handle still sold anywhere ?  Can't seem to locate my old handles, so I will have to purchase something new.  And yes I remember Howard well from my "combat days". He was one of the first guys to go with longer tail booms from what had been the norm. They made a major improvement on the fast combat airplanes of the day, and within a couple of years ALL fast combat airplanes had them. Howard knows how to improve flight characteristics of an airframe more than most guys.  Wonder what he's brought to the Stunt arena ?

Back to handles.  Where can I buy a Hot Rock handle ?

If you really want Hot Rock handles got to the E-Bay.  But I suggest you check out some of the newer handles.  There are some combat sites that have them.  I don't think you want me flying combat with a Big-D Handle or eve a Brodak handle.   H^^

If you want Hot Rock equivalents, you can make your own. I drew Marvin Denny's version and the drawing was posted here some time ago.

Otherwise it is available on the Ku-ring-gai Model Flying Club website in Oz.

Cheers, Geoff

....and epic poetry for the ages, among other things.

Hi Dan,
For initial flights on a new plane, when I want to get the handle adjustment in the ballpark without a lot of air time using a marginally adjusted handle, I use an in-flight adjustable combat handle from George Cleveland at GRS Models (google "GRS Models").

Go to "Click here to see Planes, Motors and Stuff" and scroll down to the bottom of the page.  The orange handle with the knob on the bottom (I use the knob on the top for easier in-flight adjustment) is the one.  Once I get the adjustment where I like it, I measure the handle-to-eyelet distance for each line and transfer the difference, if any, to a hard point handle using different size clips.  This gets me close enough to fly tricks confidently with only minor adjustments or none at all.  A Fancher handle also has brackets that adjust in out, but having this adjustment too asymmetrical does bad stuff.  I haven't ordered anything from Cleveland in a while, so I assume he's still in biz since his website is active.

Kaz Minato in Japan sells a hard point handle favored by some (google "Kaz Minato's World").  As we know, the Japanese have a yen for quality.

Of course, adjustment is made easier by making your leadout lengths and line lengths as close to equal as possible.  I have a flying buddy who can sit there at the field and hand-tie a new set of line ends without a jig so that both lines come out exactly the same length each time.  So aggravating.

Hope this helps.  Keep us posted on your adventures with the Magician.  Good choice for first plane back.

Back to handles.  Where can I buy a Hot Rock handle ?

Hi Dan
Reyco makes handles that are pretty darnd close to the old EZ Justs - only made of wood instead of plastic.  I think the change is a big improvement.  Brodak has them listed on their web site. On the homepage type in "Reyco" and you will find the "regular size (like a Hot Rock)

http://www.brodak.com/shop_productdetail.php?ProductID=5997

The large is like the big EZ Just:

http://www.brodak.com/shop_productdetail.php?ProductID=5999

I ever cared much for the slippery plastic, but these wooden handles are quite agreeable.

Of course if you search the Brodak site you can come up with quite a few other handles

Yea, that could be what I'm looking for.  Is it adjustable like the Hot Rock ?  There used to be guys with your last name that used to show up in Cleveland for contests, many years ago.  ;)

Adjustment is just like the old EZ Justs, the metal clip that you slip the cable through. Only real difference is the red plastic is replaced by wood (IMO a BIG improvement), in either walnut or mahogany.

I forgot to mention, remember how the EZ Just used to wear big holes where the cable exit the plastic? the Reyco cable exits are bushed with tubing...

HI Dan,

Did you find your handles, ok?  I lost track of this thread, sorry.  The handles Denny recommended are the old E-Z Just/Hot Rock clones.

I'm pretty sure you know that Denny, Archie, Big Art, etc.etc. are the Adamisin Clan (s0m many I can't remember them all! LOL!! J/K)you remember from Cleveland and all over, back in the day.  Poor old Denny had to go and win the Walker Trophy as a Senior........ can't tell him a thing anymore........ LOL!!  LL~ LL~ LL~

Hi Bill

Yes I got my handles set up for now.  Did not know that Denny won the Walker Cup. Just knew his C/L pettigree/heritage and family was well respected by us Cleveland C/L flyers. I never flew stunt as my interest in those days was in other events, but these days I think I'm going to give it a try.  Merry Christmas <=
