Another RingMaster wing build question
« on: June 02, 2015, 11:03:01 AM »
Tim W,  I just tried to go to the Brotherhood of the Ring site but my puter blocks the it saying it is affected by a virus. Can you help.

Being a first time Ring Master builder at age 70, I need some help with the wing. Is there a jig I could buy to help with the Symmetrical wing ? I am working on the Sig Akromaster now & I am having trouble with the wing assembly . I can build a nice Flat Wing on prints But this type of wing is killing me!  ???

Thanks for your help! RK Flyer    :D

The Akromaster builds flat, the kit comes with a balsa stick to put under the trailing edge.
You know when you are going to make it back here for fishing?

Hello Duke,

The wing on the Akromaster has small set of supports to hold the wing flat and I used them but it was a pain in the butt trying to get them all pined down.
Next up is the Ringmaster, I have the Jr. & Full size kits waiting. I want to find an easy way for them, so thanks for the fast reply I'll send you a PM on the Fishing.

On the akromaster, I tacked my le and te down to those little blocks using a little CA. After the wing was done, I just popped them off and sanded as normal.

That was my Skyray 35 method too, using the tabs attached to the underside of the ribs' TE. They hold it at the same height as the wide part of the rib.

Like Dane, I glued the Akromaster LE and TE supports to the building board. My board was glass and I used PVA carpenters' glue. The supports came off easily when the wing was finished.

Ok thanks for all the Akromaster tips but what about the Ringmasters ? Should I make up something to hold the LE & TE like the Akromaster or is there a better way like some other type of jig?

I am going to start the Jr. & the full size soon.

Is it a kit, or scratch? Do you have the solid LE and a round spar? If so, line up the ribs on the round spar, and then use a couple rubber bands to hold the LE to the spar. They'll go in between the ribs. Lay blocks down that support the LE and spar that are high enough to hold it up off the plans. Glue the TE first, adjust out any twist our warp, and glue the LE. Easiest way I know, and no additional jig building required.
This is a different wing, but here's what I'm talking about. Hope this helps!  ;D

Now this is going against the grain, but I have built countless wings without a jig.   The Goldberg kits, Sterling and some scratch built.   It takes masking tape, rubber bands and pins.   Sometimes the old wooden spring type clothes pin.   Also some patience.   The bigger stunters I have a CLC jig.  I have used Tom Morris' jig also.   But it seems with the Ringmaster series with the exception of the Imperial I can build a straight wing in my hands.   That is where the tape, rubber bands and pins come into play.   I use a little CA for preliminary glueing with Elmers white glue for final glue joints.   So far no failures, unless I make a verticle landing and my latest and lightest Ringmaster survived that.   If you have one of the later laser cut kits they usually have tabs on the ribs so you can build on a flat surface.  I mark the leading and trailing edges as well as the spar where the ribs go.  Brodak kits have a good manual for building their kit.

Anyway I have several S-1 Ringmasters in which one was made using an original kit and the lightest one is an RSM kit.  The Stuntin Ringmaster is an S-1 with top and bottom spars.  Need to get an S-1A version to finish the S-1 series.   By the way have the Super Ringmaster that is of the original construction.  Did I mention I have a Ringmaster twin with 2 LA 25's.

Here's my redneck wing jig for my Sterling Yak-9. Centerline behind the LE pinned at the same height as the TE. Square blocks and some leftover TE jigs from an old Jumpin Bean kit.

I was going to suggest something like Rusty's Redneck Rig.  Personally, when I can I use jig rods, but that requires that the wing ribs be cut with jig holes.

The problem with electric is that once you get the smoke generator and sound system installed, the plane is too heavy.

I bought a wood board, 1/8" Lite ply and two 5/16" (8mm) alum tubes and made this jig to build a RingMaster S-1 wing. I bought the rib set from Brodak, and so it was easy to build the wing using the jig because the ribs had 5/16" holes for the jig tube.

And I must say that Aki built a beautiful Ringmaster which was flown in Japan for the 2013 Annual Worldwide Ringmaster Fly-A-Thon! I hope he will be able to fly this year!

That's Akihiro front center. He flies from  his wheelchair!!
