Aluminum motor mount pads ?
« on: April 16, 2007, 08:54:14 PM »
Hi ,

Yet another question :)

I want to put 1/8" thick aluminum pads on the maple motor mounts .
Are the  aluminum pads held on to the maple mounts , solely by the motor lugs and the mounting bolts , or should I use an adhesive to secure the pads ?
Should the pads be just as long as the motor mount lugs ?

As always . thanks y1

Hi Rob,

A rule of thumb is to make the pad about 1/8" longer than the lug on each end.
There is no need to glue the pad if you don't want to. I certainly would not glue
alum pads on for a Fox 35, because the eng. lugs aren`t square, so if they`re
allowed to float it`s better.

Cheers,

Paul

I use aluminum pads on all my planes. I rout out the hardwood motor beams to fit the aluminum flush and secure the pads with a wood screw on each end. I then drill and tap for the motor mount screws. No blind nuts. The wood doesn't get squeezed. I've NEVER had a failure.

Hi Frank...
I hold that doing it your way, which is neat, has two shortcomings:
1) when you hog out the beam, you are creating a potential for stress at the edge of the cut.
2) you are remo9ving material from the place (under/over the engine) where the most mass is desired.

Also, I have found that installing the 1/8" pads onto the mount also allows for more adjustment with the tank.

BTW, the Moonies make some pads that are 3.16 thick, allowing them to be drilled and tapped.

Just thoughts, echoing some thoughts of Big Jim Greenaway and Winfred.....
