Nice pics Matt, thanks for sharing. In the first group, what's the grey Navy plane in the upper right corner of the Patternmaster pic? Any other pics of that one?

That navy plane was Vic Macaluso's Crusader.  I have one other picture of that plane, and here it is...

According to what grandpa said, Randy Smith told Vic how much to drop the wing for vertical cg.  We have his F-14, and it is finished beautifully, I wish I could've seen the Crusader, and I've seen one of his SV-11s.

Vic now is flying RC jets, and at times, grandpa and I think of a way to get Vic back into CL...

Some day I will just HAVE to build one of Vic's Crusaders.  Either the first .35 sized one, or the second piped one.  The first one is Nostalgia30 eligible, so it might get done.... ;D

Hi Wayne,

Vic built his first Crusader in 1970.  It was part of an article in a 1971 AM with Bill Suarez's F-4.  It was Fox .35 powered, but Vic later said the engine was worked on by one of his speed buddies (or something like that! LOL!!).  He built the piped verson using SV 11 wing, moments, etc., just kinda *upside down*.

Just crossed my old mind.. MAN had two stunters in the great issue (Bill's and Vic's). Now MAN is completely divorced fropm CL and MA appears to be doing the same. The current issue of MA can be read in5 minutes. We are lucky to have SN, which takes a few days to read.

Tom, The unfortunate reality of this is as usual, money! I am a long time subscriber to MAN as well as most of the model aviation mags, I think the problem is advertisers and unfortunately, there just isn't much if any from the cl segment of the hobby, if you have seen any of my postings, then you know that I am one of the older modelers(68) who has flown RC for years and decided to include cl (which I did from about age 8 in the early fifties until the late sixties when I built a Heathkit GD19 radio and left cl for RC) SO, to make a long story short, if we can generate a little more interest from the younger generation, maybe the advertisers will come and the magazine articles will follow. I started subscribing to Flying Models a few years back and begin to realize what I had been missing, so here I am, just finished a scratch built Ringmaster and looking forward to the good times and friendships ONLY this facet of model aviation can bring. I really wish more would try it, they don't know what they are missing! Bob

Actually Bill's Phantom and Vic's Crusader were in the same issue of American Aircraft Modeler magazine... not MAN!

Bob,
Whoops you are right. I was thinking of Bill's P-38 which was in the MAN April 1966.

It is still a shame that only FM caters at all to CL and they seem to be in trouble.

It just seems that MA is catering to $15,000 jets,  1/4 scale, high end pylon etc. I guess that is where the advertising money is coming from, but I don't think that even the majority of RC people can afford them.

You got that right, cl overall is usually less expensive and complicated than rc and a great way for someone young and interested in model aviation to get started in this great hobby!  I have seen many people spend an awful lot of time and money to get started in rc, crash right off the bat, and totally lose intrest. What a shame! Bob

C'mon guys, let's not turn this one into another MAN rant. Sadly, we all know here that even talking about MAN anymore is a waste of all of our time, and money.

Hi Wayne, I never intended  my posting to be a rant, I can't blame the magazines if there is no cl advertising, we just need to try and generate more interest in cl and hope things get better. As I said earlier, cl is where it all started for a lot of us and those that haven't (or won't) tried it are just missing out in my opinion. Bob

No worries Robert, I didn't say that it was. I just said let's not turn Matt's thread into one. More often than not anytime someone mentions MAN that's what it turns into, I've been guilty of that one myself.

In June 2003 Vic and I were flying at Brodak's.  We were in the pits together.  The finish on the Spitfire was something to behold!  You could shave in the reflection from the wing!  I'm quite sorry to hear that Vic is flying planes with little boxes.  :'(  Hopefully he'll get back to CL sometime?  y1
