Title: Short stunt grunts of the day
Post by: Leo Mehl on February 03, 2007, 02:44:36 PM
This is a picture of all the short stunt  grunts that flew in the fall follies a few years back, in Salem. You will notice  Pat Johnston standing on his tippy toes. Flyers from left to right. Cris Cox, Pat Johnston, Bob Smiley, Alice cotten Royer, Leo Mehl, Niles Norling. Actually this should be called the best looking flyers in the Northwest. You will notice the shorter flyes on the left and they get taller as you move to right. Picture taken by Paul Walker with my camera.

Here is a photo of Bob Welch and Joe Dill with their Custom Chimpmunks at the 67 Albany Oregon meet.
Speaking of short people...just bye chance...look at Leo Mel walking behind the camera, behind Joe Dill on the right, other short modeler. LL~

I have no roooooooooooooom to talk...I used to be 5.8 and everything but my waist line. Everything else has shrunk or disappeared along with my hair. Too much info? Right? n1

I just had to add a picture of Utahs own short stunt guru.

The one and only GSO, Gordan Delaney. My good friend and mentor.

The other picture shows our nieghbor to the north, Pat Johnston, showing why hitting 5 foot bottoms is so easy for him. ( above his shoulder)  Ha.

I have the same shot of Pat at the same contest (Albany a couple of years ago). Hey, having 4 feet at eyeball level is helpful in hitting those bottoms!

I thought I had some shot of Gordan somewhere in my old boxes of slides...but no luck so far...it would be great to see some of his legendary older models...and how he used to look waaaay back in the early stone age days gone bye-bye.

Gordy and the rest of us  have  truly "COME A LONG WAY BABY!...It is a known fact that most of us  learned to fly control line exactly the same way.
If I am not mistaken...Gordy and I  both had the same stunt master...to teach us the fine art of how to tie that 2lb round river rock to a 60ft string?

Then with some difficulty...we learned to roll that rock down a hill...to begin the coveted art of spinning that river rock AROUND AND AROUND AND AROUND our heads without getting dizzy.
Gee..we have come a long way....since those early days and for proof positive. The came the art of hand lauchin' those stones. That's another wacky story for sure...
Back to those beautiful photos of Gordan plane.

LOOK AT THAT AWESOMELY BEAUTIFUL STUNT MODEL OF GORDY'S WOW!  ALSO THAT PHOTO OF HIS NEW FLAWLESS "SWINGIN' TECHNIQUE IN THE CENTER OF THAT STUNT CIRCLE...SEAL THE DEAL that we have truly COME A LONG, LONG, LONG WAY since those early RIVER ROCK models of long long ago. LL~

As Schultzie, That Tony of Gordans has been around a few years now. He's already thinkin' of something new. BTW, that dude swingin' the rock in the picture above him is the one and only Pat Johnston at Albany a few years ago.

I really ought to nominate Gordy as Stunt Grunt for the day. One of the best pilots who never won the NATS.
John

Here's a picture of the Tony before paint.

Nice shot of the Tony in it's underwear...Beautiful craftsmanship. (Sweet little young lady peekin from under that wing?
Could she be the next Dawn Cosmillo?

Any more photos of Gordy as a child from the good ol' days?

My dad was all of 5 foot 8 inches and 225 pounds of solid muscle.  Mother was 5 foot 11 inches.  Now I stretce to get to 6 foot even.  But, dad always said there is no such thing as short people, they are built closer to the ground.  If he was still around, I would have him tell of the 6 foot 4 inch person he sent out to change spark plugs on the old Cat Diesel bull dozer.  DOC Holliday
