1974 World Champion, Bob Gieske with his modified Gobler'
It was said...that after he won a very difficult world cup title (HORRIFIC WINDS AND RAIN) and in celebration at the ceremonies...he BROKE HIS FAMOUS PIPE IN HALF AND BURINED IT IN THE SOIL OF THE STUNT CIRCLE-
as it was said that he also made a promise to his beloved wife, that if he won....HE WOULD STOP SMOKING THAT PIPE?
(Hummm? I can clearly remember him with that pipe in later photos...as he always claimed that he used that pipe as not only a stunt-gunsight...but in calm air conditions, he would watch which direction the smoke was heading and make flight corrections more accuately etc.
(Hey what ever excuse works...talk about success.
Bill Werwage was 2nd.
Gene Schaffer was 6th.
WHERE IS GENE SCHAFFER TODAY!!!
(His finishes were MIND BENDING...he was an advocate of kaaazilllion and more coats of clear top coat dope..carefully sanded between coats and rubbed to perfection. Most amazing of all...his models were always extremely light weight. That model that he took to 6th place was over 720 sq. inches of wing...and weighed a mere 58 ounces.
