Did we really learn to read from books like that?? Such memories.
Oh, yes, Doc! ...And there were other volumes. I recall one story where Dick, Jane, and Sally were going to their Aunt's house. They took their dog and cat, (Spot and Puff) and their parents, (Mother and Father were their names)
Before they reached their destination, they had to turn onto another road. Father said they were going on a DETOUR! What an adventure!
I recall one of the first grade students having trouble with the word 'detour'. He pronounced it 'deck-ter', and the nun teacher (Catholic school in 1948) gave his knuckles a rap with the edge of a wooden ruler. Got his attention. The class was relieved, as the story progressed to a thrilling climax.
They arrived at their aunt's house in mid-afternoon.
Aunt Ann had baked a pie.
