My favorite book at that time was "Bobby and His Airplanes" - well, that and "Scuffy the Tugboat." Anyway, I always look for that one when in the children's sections of old book stores (there are still a very few around here), but I have never seen a copy. It's interesting that for most of these stores - unlike the Old Stratemeyer teen books like Tom Swift, The Rover Boys, etc, there seem to be very few of the little childrens' books from before 1950. I also remember a book from nursery school that had a couple kids playing with Super Constellation models. 'anyone remember that one?

Incidentally, we 1st-grade guys all thought that Sally was a pretty dumb kid. He men didn't associate with "little kids" like that.

Yes, we did...and rather well, too.  'Dick and Jane' may look pretty simplistic, but the fact remains that our generation learned to read, write, spell and construct a proper declarative sentence far better than most from later generations.  Of course much of that can be attributed to teachers who accepted nothing less than perfection....because if you didn't 'cut it' you were 'left back' to repeat the grade - something unheard of in today's permissive society.

Pretty soon after I learned to read, we took a subscription to a weekly magazine that has more recently got an award for work for the Finnish language. My daughter (now 16) reads it too. Sooo, what is this cultural icon that is loved by people of all ages here? It is the Aku Ankka, or Donald Duck, comics magazine.

Oh, yes, Doc!  ...And there were other volumes. I recall one story where Dick, Jane, and Sally were going to their Aunt's house. They took their dog and cat, (Spot and Puff) and their parents, (Mother and Father were their names)

Before they reached their destination, they had to turn onto another road. Father said they were going on a DETOUR! What an adventure!

I recall one of the first grade students having trouble with the word 'detour'. He pronounced it 'deck-ter', and the nun teacher (Catholic school in 1948) gave his knuckles a rap with the edge of a wooden ruler. Got his attention. The class was relieved, as the story progressed to a thrilling climax.
They arrived at their aunt's house in mid-afternoon.
Aunt Ann had baked a pie.

Yes..this book is truly an amazing story...which we told to me and my twin sister Mary Jo by our single parent mother who was a high school teacher. What a heartfelt story as I remember...illustrating the power of close friendships, courage and commitant to make a difference in the lives of others...
